The photo here shows the ceremonial photo taken when a member of Congress wants his family all around him, and usually the wife with the Bible, and Nancy Pelosi among them, seeming to swear them in. this is for the purpose of the photograph, and the family togetherness. a nice souvenir. the real swearing in is on the House floor, with the Speaker presiding, and the Congressman in the well of the House, near the lecturn of his party. He simply raises his hand and repeats the oath. He is allowed to have his children on the floor of the House, seated on the front row, sometimes. When all the members of the House are sworn in in January, their children are allowed to be on the House floor, and it is very festive - then the children often sit next to their Congressional parent, and the House members stand in place and raise one hand and repeat the oath. So when anyone talks about a member of Congress taking the oath on the Bible, or on the Koran, that has nothing to do with what actually happens, in the official and formal swearing-in. There are two members who might use the Koran, but then only in the ceremonial photograph that everyone wants to get for personal and family reasons. Those photographs are not taken on the floor of the House, or in any way official. If people watch cspan, they can see all this for themselves. Only liars and uninformed persons talk about taking an oath on the Koran. In the Senate, the new Senators come up front, four at a time, with their escorts from their states - the other Senator, or former Senators. Sometimes they are holding their own copy of the Bible, but only because after the official swearing-in, they go to the old Senate Chamber down the hall for their official photograph, which is with the Vice President.
