More Venezuelans Getting U.S. Asylum

“Vilma Petrash, coup-plotter, terrorist, we don't want you in this university.”

Gisela Parra started trembling behind the steering wheel and nearly hit another car when she heard the news over the radio: She had been charged with trying to overthrow President Hugo Chavez.

Fearing she would end up behind bars on what she says are trumped-up accusations, she boarded a private yacht in the middle of the night and escaped to the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao, her gateway to the United States and political asylum.

'I went into shock because I never imagined that something like that could happen to me,' Parra told The Associated Press by phone from Palmetto Bay, Fla., where she is among a growing community of Venezuelan asylum-seekers in the Miami region. 'It was at that moment that I understood the Cubans who leave on rafts.' Read more

Why leave Venezuela? The Venezuelans have nothing to fear from His Excellency, President Hugo Rafael Chavez.

Hugo Chavez is a great leader who will help the poor in Venezuela. He even helped low income and poor areas of the United States.

He is right. Bush is the devil and capitalism is hell.

Connie Mack and his grand-standing on Chavez will effectively turn Florida into a sanctuary for Venezuelans...this kid is in over his head and needs a muzzle when it comes to realizing the repercussions of his mouth..if he wants to bad-mouth Chavez go for it, but little Connie better be prepared to fund the fallout from another (Mariel) because I just cant afford it anymore..

Only rich venezuelans who feel their benefits and privileges are been reduced are going to USA, like Vilma Petrash who fled the country in a luxurious private yacht. Now government policies are directed to improve the conditions of poor people and of course, millionaires are mad about that.

Which millionaires are you referring to? The old ones or the new ones that are in favor of Chavez?

How about Jesse Chacon's brother, he was a nobody and now owns a bank. Shit how did that happen?

I refer to those like Gisela Parra who want to overthrow the democratic government of Venezuela, and when they are discovered escape in their luxurious planes or yachtes to Miami where they keep their fortunes steal from our country in former times. Sure the lady refer in the article has a fine mansion there and enough money to have a good life.
When you acusse any one you must say his name, and in this case the name of the bank, sure you're a liar!

Arne Chacon, brother of Jesse Chacon, now "owns" and investment bank Baninvest. How in hell?

Why is it that you cannot see it? are you that blind? You accuse the "rich" and yet in Venezuela, everyone is making illicit money with Chavez.

Make no mistake, Chavistas also have yachts and luxurious planes, it's "robolucion" time baby!

Arne Chacón, never heard that name. can you show any proof that he is Jesse Brother and, of course a proof he owns a bank, I could say that you are a thief but I won't do it because a don't have a proof. It's very easy to affirm something without assuming responsibility for what you say. Come to Venezuela and accuse him with the proof in you hand, if you don't do it, then you just lied again.

Sigue sonando gafo

The rats that tried to overthrow the democratically elected President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, deserve the death penalty. If the goverment needs an executor, I'd be happy to do the job for free.

Another radical? Nice!

Why is it that you all mention he was democratically elected? He did the same thing, so he is also a rat. I guess we did miss the chance of executing him.

Anyway, if you are sooo into executing people, why don't you just execute yourself?

Chavez never was a criminal. Quite to the contrary: In 1992 he tried to save his country and fellow citizens from the oppressive dictatorship that brought along human rights abuses, mass poverty, exploitation and corruption.

So he had a higher moral purpose? I see how it works. He is above everyone else, so his actions were justified, thanks for clarifying the hypocrisy of the whole thing.

There was no dictatorship in Venezuela, Chavez is living proof of that, had he tried that against a dictator like he his, he would be dead by now.

Nothing you have mentioned has gone away, nothing..

-Human rights abuses? See the massacre of puente Llaguno
- Oppressive dictatorship? Check, he now wants to rule forever. He is the ONLY Venezuelan that matters
- Mass poverty? Take a plane down there, see for yourself.
- Corruption? for crying out loud, Chavez's government has made millionaires of everyone around him, they are as corrupt as it gets.

Keep observing, you may finally see...

MercurioCromo, you're obviously ignorant as to the history and current situation in Venezuela. You need to inform yourself thoroughly before twisting the facts and posting such nonsense.
For starters, I suggest reading the following article, titled 'How does he do it?'

"One of the great imponderables for the Venezuelan opposition his how Chavez is so popular after nearly seven years in office [as of June, 2005} when, according to them, the country is coming apart at the seems. The explanations range from the superficial (“it is all based on promises”), to the bizarre (“Chavez supporters don’t believe in rational things like improving their standard of living”), to the ostrich strategy (“most Venezuelans want him out – I don’t care what all the polls say”).

What the opposition will twist, and turn, and do anything to deny is the real explanation – that things are getting better under Chavez and that it is this improvement in their standard of living that leads most Venezuelans (over 70%) to support him."

A person that sees human being that disagree with him as rats, and wants to execute them himself, is not only ignorant but dangerous.

I don't twist facts, you do.

Why don't you read these?

On government corruption, The Economist: http://www.economist.com/world/la/displaystor...

Or how about this one? On how the government lies using stats?

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms.php...

Or how about Fukuyama's opinion on Chavez (this is a curve ball so you have learn who Fukuyama is)

You've just twisted the facts AGAIN.
Neither do I "see human beings that disagree with me, as rats", nor do I "want to execute them myself."
I consider the criminals who tried to overthrow the democratically elected President Chavez to be rats that I'd love to execute. Perhaps you should take some 'reading and comprehension' classes before posting another comment.
