Its Really Not That Hard To Follow The History And See The Results, Or To See Without Divine Intervention, We Would Perish.

Antibiotics work through a multiplicity of factors, but most do not outright kill bacteria. They prevent bacteria from reproducing or growing in some way. Because your immune system is so powerful, antibiotics are usually enough to wipe out any invading bacterial agent in short time.
But some bacteria might have a slight genetic resistance to antibiotics. Those will be the ones which are selected for in your body if you are taking antibiotics. If you, say, skip a day or drink alcohol (that inhibits antibiotics), you provide a window for these bacteria to reproduce - they then come to dominate in the population of bacteria. This is how antibiotic resistance is selected for: patients who, for whatever reason, cannot or do not follow the proper dosing of antibiotics.
Antivirals are somewhat different. They likewise inhibit viral replication and do so through the prevention of viral enzymes from functioning. Viruses evolve antiviral resistance in the same way: if you skip using it on time, for whatever reason, the viruses that have some slight resistance will come to dominate in the population of viruses in your body. Plasmodium species are similar to both bacteria and viruses. They're single celled organisms and they invade liver cells to mature and red blood cells to reproduce. Plasmodium hijack your immune system by creating fever. Fever renders the patient immobile so that mosquitoes can bite them easily. And they respond to our medicines in the same way that I described above.
So all research on new antibiotics and antivirals are trying to figure out ways that pathogens cannot evolve around. One amazing breakthrough has occurred in antiviral research - they've found a way to block almost all viruses from replicating in the body. If so, this will be the most powerful technology created yet this century - like the discovery of penicillin.
All such research is framed through understanding selection pressures, genes, and mutation. There's no other way to frame the research, but you're welcome to outline something for me.
