Healthy debate: Should sick pay be required?

For school bus driver Jamille Aine, a cold is more than an inconvenience. His Hartford , Conn., employer does not offer paid sick days, so if he can't shake the bug, he may not be able to pay his bills.

Larger corporations can afford to pay it and do, smaller businesses can't afford it and don't....And shouldn't be forced to. If you absolutely think you need sick pay...work for a company that has it ....or alternatively stash away a little cash each payday to build up a safety net for yourself. Imagine that, taking care of yourself!? Can be done.

I ran a warehouse and the policy was you were given vacation time and personal days(3 per year)If you were sick you could get paid for it from these days. That is fine and the way it should be.Small companys can't always afford to pay sick days off they should not be forced to.

If you can't afford to operate a business with some degree of financial security for your employees, don't have a business or don't hire employees. Or alternately...don't put so much profit in your own pocket and you'll build up a safety net for those who help keep your business operational. Imagine that. Taking care of those who are taking care of you. It can be done.

As a former business owner, I agree completly with you. I was only as strong and profitable as my weakest employee. Take care of your employee's and they will in turn, help you and your business be succesfull.

The free market takes care of this. Companies with benefits attract better employees, while those that don't attract the rest or have to pay higher wages to attract good employees. I'd be smart to give up my paid sick leave for an extra $2/hr. I do however have a problem with an employer being able to fire you for being sick...that's Florida for you though.

As my company does, you accumulate sick/personal time. That is a simple solution.
