Vt. Gov. Douglas Does Not See Any Ecnomic Benefit To Marriage Equality

Full story: lezgetreal.com

While people are considering lining up to take his job, Governor Jim Douglas went to Washington and answered a question which is hotly disputed by several academes. The Blade asked Governor Douglas whether or not he believed that the state of Vermont would see any benefit from the passage of the same-sex marriage law which went into effect on 1 September. His answer in the short form was ‘no.’ He does not believe that there will be any economic benefit to the state in terms of increased tax revenue or jobs.

Yea, but that study was done book-larners. Why would anyone listen to them?
Everyone knows that book-larnin' is for elitists. Everything that you need to know you can see on TV or your preacher can tell you.

Well... Gov. Douglas can eat THIS information for dinner...

My partner and I had a civil union in Vermont in 2000. Not that it would do any good here at home but it was something we did for ourselves and we wanted to hoping that ONE DAY it would be worth something in Alabama (once the Supreme Court ends all these bullsh!t state constitutional hate amendments).

Now, we can get married in Vermont. SO on our 20th anniversary of being together (10/29) we are planning on going to Vermont and get married at the same church with the same minister. Not the best time of the year for it, but that's the day we celebrate as our anniversary.

If the good governor wants us to, we could always spend our money in neighboring New Hampshire but I PREFER to spend it in Vermont as a very small way of saying "Thanks" for being fair-minded.

And I'm pretty sure we won't be the only non-Vermonters coming there to tie the knot (for us it's like a second time!)

I agree with Bridgette that there will be no stampede to the altar as there was in 2000 or as there was in MA in 2004 or in CA last fall. I don't expect out-of-staters to flock to Vermont since it's so late to the party. But if they do, it might be BECAUSE Vermont is such a wonderful place to be in the autumn--at least up until Columbus Day.

Who wouldn't want to get married surrounded by the fall colors and the Green Mountains? Or along side Lake Champlain?

Fall is what we LIVE FOR up here. Get a clue.

And Lazlow: Too bad your anniversary is so late in the season. The best part of fall starts in the next two weeks. Please come again the first week of October for the most beautiful days of the year.

This revelation isn't really a big suprise considering the Gov was against marriage equality in the first place. All I have to say is "in your face Gov Douglas"!
