IT IS SHAMEFUL THAT THE CHURCH BUILDING IS NOT BEING USED FOR THE PURPOSE IT WAS BUILT . I NEED A BUILDING TO HOUSE A CONGREGATION ! WHY NOT GIVE IT TO A MINISTER WHO IS DOING THE LORDS WORK AND THEREFORE CAN ACTUALLY FILL IT??? IT IS A SIGN OF THE TIMES WHEN 'THE CHURCH' BECOMES A BUSINESS AND SELLS OFF THE BUILDING FOR THE HIGHEST BID WHEN IT COULD BE AN OASIS IN A DESERT. IT WOULD BE EASIER TO BUILD A MOSQUE THAN A CHRISTIAN BUILDING WITH THE EXISTING MIND SET IN THE LOCAL COUNCILS. WHO NEEDS A 'DEVIL' OR ANY OPPOSITON WHEN THE THE VERY PEOPLE THAT HOLD THE POWER OF THE CHURCH PROPERTY HAVE GIVEN UP ON CHRISTS WORK BY NOT EMPOWEREING THE ONES WHO HAVE SOLD OUT FOR HIS CAUSE YET RECIEVE A CLOSED DOOR.

I would love to purchase this church. It is too bad many churches across the Uk have been sold or demolished. I just hope that people/government value the historic significance of some of these structures.

This is what one company did with a Catholic church in Pittsburgh:
http://www.churchbrew.com/ The church went up for sale because they didn't have enough of a congregation to pay for heating and whatnot. Sometimes people just cannot afford a very large building anymore. By the way, the food there is great and it's still a bit weird to see the vats in the old sanctuary/pulpit. We still see friars (they're still around up there) nuns, and priests go in from time to time to get a bite to eat. |

Is it true that it's been sold and will be converted into a restaurant? Just what the city needs - less culture

I would rather have a contractor come in and preserve the history of the building, than let it fall under a wrecking ball.
The reason the churches are falling by the wayside is because they do not have the congregations to fill the church and bring in the revenue for the upkeep. Many of these older structures need maintenance and restoration. I have always wanted to live/work in a church with huge stained glass windows. |

They ruined Hanley when they built the Potteries Shopping Centre. All our councillors, past and present, must have watched American TV and seen their 'mall mentality' and wanted the f*x#ing same for us. No thanks but It's too late - anyone remember Sherwin's? St Johns has been surrounded by 'red brick' edifices, car parks and logo's for a long time now and is choking on all the crap. Let the Diocese have it's money - it will help to pay for a much smaller church which will cater for fewer people and have change for more stock investments. Barclay's Bank already gobbled up the church cemetery years ago. We've had this council 'knock down and rebuild' mentality in Stoke since the 50's thanks to Mr Poulson and his back-handers to elected councillors. St Pauls has stood for 219 years and should be allowed to die along with the faith it was built for.

The new Tesco, although not even built yet, has ruined Hanley. All those small factories and potteries, plus a pub and shops on Broad Street, demolished. For what? Oh!!! A bigger Tesco. How many extra jobs will that bring Stoke-on-Trent. Isn't the current Tesco big enough already? Exactly WHY does Hanley need a gigantic supermarket away from the main shopping area?
Whereas, if they'd converted the now-demolished buildings into smaller units, that might have re-vitalised the centre of SoT. They could have created and encouraged an arts community between Broad Street and Etruria Road, given SoT a whole new image. |

What is happening in your country is what has happened in the USA for many years now, thanks to Walmart. Which I do believe Walmart owns Tesco? They treat their employees like shite and wreak havoc on communities. There is not way small business owners can compete with places like Tesco that can buy in bulk from China. It is up to the communities to stop these large corporations from taking advantage of communities. Getting large tax breaks, then, when the community becomes stale because they cannot afford even the products in the Walmart, Walmart pulls out of the town. Leaving empty buildings and moving down the road to the next community with the new "Super Walmart." It is a travesty really. |
