I'ts hard to fathom Salinas as a tourist attraction. Other than the Steinbeck Center, what else is there to attract tourists when no other special event is occurring, i.e., the rodeo? Especially with the scenic Monterey peninsula and its abundant tourist attractions just a few miles away, why would a tourist want to spend any length of time in Salinas? As a local yokel, Salinas doesn't even come up as part of the itinerary when taking our out-of-town guests to see the sights. Besides, the perpetual gang violence in Salinas may act as a deterrent for tourism. Even for me, this violence has significantly decreased the number of shopping trips I take to Northridge. And when I am there, I do not enjoy carefree shopping, as I feel the need to keep a constant vigile of any suspicious activity or people around me. I tend to go in, get what I came for and leave as quickly as possible.

I totally agree with IPTA, it’s ridiculous to” have a tourist info booth”. What do they offer brochures with the latest homicides of the past 8 months. Salinas is not Carmel where people can walk freely without worrying if there might be s shooting while shopping or simply taking a walk in your neighborhood. It’s kind of hypocrite just to focus on John Steinbeck and try to sugar coated what Salinas has turned into. I wonder if J. Steinbeck were alive today, if he would write about the past 21 death shooting in our community. Tourist don’t stop in Salinas, I was born and raise here in Salinas and I myself don’t feel safe. I shop in Monterey for the same reason, fear of safety and how sad is that.
Never to return

If Steinbeck were alive he would do what a lot of us have done. Pack up and go. I will never return to Salinas or ever spend a dime there. However, I do wish you "Good Luck"

Daily Horoscope for January 8

Leo

Why are you still fighting, Leo? Everyone else went home a long time ago, but you're still here pounding your fists on the table. Although you don't want to admit it, accepting defeat may be your most practical option at this point. Sometimes it's just easier to move on than to keep up the fight. When you're forced to restructure, at least you have a chance to redefine. YouÕl get the opportunity to start with a clean slate, so use it to your advantage.
