A debt-ridden vicar who stole £10,000 has been jailed after a judge dismissed his claim he took the money to help needy parishioners as ‘a tissue of lies.’
Vaughan Leonard, 60, admitted taking the cash but told police and Manchester Crown Court he used the bulk of it to buy food and clothing for three hard-up families. He even provided a 'spiritual journal' which, he claimed, detailed his charitable donations.
