No one in particular wrote: I've seen this happen before in my school. Kids suddenly decide their emo, then go out and start cutting themselves. I saw enough ambulances at the school to send them all to the psych hospital. Keep up your denial people. The rest of us see what's going on! Yes, I know you emo kids will get all rude. But we see what is happening. Yell and scream all you want. You can't make it go away! what? o.o wow could it be that theres something wrong with this generation, thats why kids are growing a need to hide behind black? Could it be that we live in a world of fear, and make are way through the meat grinder otherwise known as school? we were young when 9/11 happened and now a days most homes are dis functional? could it be that more kids looking for something bigger than them, a word that says they belong? Maybe 'emo' is growing because more kids feel like this, maybe the music labeled emo is the exact music that kids like us are attracted to because it speaks to our experiences and this generation's problems, maybe its growing because no one sees a way out, not even adults. Hows about you get your head out your ass and take a look around, we're screaming for help but we can't do anything! and all your ass does is decide to label kids more and say 'stop denying it' are you f*cking stupid? >:( GOD! and then people blame MCR! MCR saved my godamn life, if it wasn't for them I'd be just another story on the TV 'dead girl who listened to emo music'

this effing emo bull is so pathetic we don't feel depressed cause of Mcr or hawthorne heights or any other emo genre bands they give us hope and the will to go on. if little children want to commit suicide because they heard suicide or self harm is cool, how can they go on and blame mcr Mcr saves lives.

Dad of emo wrote: My daughter was what she called an “emo” kid. She was a bright, happy, and successful child. When she was 13, she changed. She grew darker, sullen, and withdrew from us, and her friends. She claimed that she was “emo.” She said that stood for “emotional.” He grades dropped, and she stayed in her room most of the day. This continued for months. My wife and I thought that this was just a phase that she would just “snap out of.” We were wrong. Eventually, she tried to kill herself. We were able to stop her just in time. She is now recovering and we have removed her from the emo lifestyle. As time wears on, we see more and more of our daughter. While she was in the psychiatric hospital, one of the therapists showed me the website; whatisemo.bravehost.com . Once we saw that site, we understood what happened to our daughter. If you are a concerned parent, please visit this site and inform yourself. Do not let your child join the emo subculture! Oh, jsyk, i went to the page and you have no idea how many times i wished i could punch you. M.C.R IS NOT THE PROBLEM, YOU JUST HAVE TO BLAME SOMEONE AND SURE AS HELL YOU DON'T WANNA TAKE IT!!! Whoever made the site is going to pay. Nobody can EVER say that Helena is 'emo' It's about Gerard's Friggin' Gramdma! They just can't stop Blaming MCR. P.S. I used to read 'the daily mail' online until they blamed My Chemical Romance and Good charloette for telling kids to mutilate themselves. It's the kid's choice

Wow! The whatisemo.bravehost.com site is perfectly right! I saw all the pictures that the emo kids post on line. NO CUTTING OR SUICIDE REFERENCES THERE.. NOT A BIT!!!!! Then is looked at the forums and saw all the threats and talk about cutting. NOPE NO REFERENCES TO CUTTING AND SUICIDE THERE EITHER!!!! Of course, I’ll go back to school in the fall. I’ll see the same kids that call themselves emo and show off the cuts on their arms. NOPE THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN CAUSE EMO IS NOT ABOUT CUTTING OR SUICIDE!!! NOW WAY!!! NOT A BIT!!!!! I CLEARLY MUST BE HALLUCINATING! Who are you emos trying to fool? Don’t you realize that there are people that see this going on EVERY DAY!!! Why do you think there are more and more attacks on emo? IT BECAUSE IT'S TRUE AND PEOPLE SEE IT WITH THEIR OWN EYES!! IT’S NOT A STEREOTYPE IF IT REALLY IS HAPPENING!!! Do you seriously think that there are no emo kids out there cutting? Are there no emo kids showing off their cuts because they have to “show their pain” to be a “real emo?” I heard them saying that. I know about 15 of them at my school. Are you going to tell me that I’m not seeing that? Are you going to say that all of the pictures on that site are faked when most of then can be seen on emo-corner or emobucket? I find it very amusing that you people keep wanting this site taken down. Does it show things that the rest of you don’t want the world to see? Too many “inconvenient truths” there? Too many verifiable facts? In verifiable, I mean that it points to cutting and suicide references that I saw and heard, that my friends see and hear. I sure the teachers and other school staff know about it too. I guess thats the point then. You don’t want everyone putting it all together and seeing what emo is really doing to kids! In the end. You people can deny all you want, you can protest empty buildings all you want. You can make blog entries, websites, forums; whatever you want. You can never take away what me and probably millions of people SEE and HEAR on a regular basis. I look forward to reading your smug denial of the reality that people can see for themselves.

This thread, like every other thread on this topic, has degenerated into nonsense.
I'm as big a fan of 'emo' music as anyone (I hesitate to use the expression, it's so overused it's pretty much lost all meaning.) However, the way some people choose to defend it is embarassing.
I think that neither extreme opinion is right here. The supporters would have you believe no 'emo kid' cuts, or if they do, there's some sort of inexplicable justification for it, while the cynics would have you believe it's a genuine epidemic. While I appreciate and wholeheartedly respect any attempts made by parents to safeguard their children's welfare, I do feel that there's a certain amount of scapegoating going on too. I personally feel that My Chemical Romance's message has been misinterpreted and sensationalised by some sections of the liberal media, but there will be no 'smug denial' from me. I feel that the link between MCR themselves and the problem has been exaggerated, however, and that even a casual examination of the band and their live shows, interviews, communications with fans and general mentality would show that this is not the sort of thing they endorse.
All the while, however, the defence of the genre and the bands has been occasionally embarassing, with people throwing around empty threats and proving generally unwilling to listen to the other side. That said, it seems that the 'emos'(once again, baulking at using the expression) aren't really being listened to either.
The whatisemo site DOES have some facts on it, but it also has a fair degree of misinformation and sensationalism. Also, in one of the "Emo Expose" type videos on there, the background music is ironically "Hold On" by Good Charlotte, which is quite possibly the song with the most overt anti-suicide message I've ever heard.
That said, there's no room for debate on the topic any more due to the stubbornness of both sides. If parents wish to protect their children, that's obviously admirable. However, it might be wise to listen to what they have to say too.

It's true, the emo life style is bullshit, but don't you dare clump us with that RIDICULOUS "movement" I want that site taken down because it ignorant parents. Parents who see there completely normal children fall into depression and say "its the emo movement!". Are you f*cking kidding me? you don't have to proclaim yourself emo for other people to do it first, even your parents? what has the world come to when we can see someone with real problems, cutting and thoughts of suicide and say "your emo" does that help? this is just another way of branding kids, putting them in a category of disturbed wrong children, treated like freaks because according to there parent have something very wrong with them. You can be a "joke" and kill yourself, you can be a "prep" and cut. and of course, listening to MCR doesn't make you emo. It's a generational problem that this site is worsening. Parents are gullible to everything the media force feeds them, they will live by this if they so choice. Everyone who wears black get glared at, and the real problem is never addressed, good job!

I am kinda pissed that the site thinks Helena is an evil song. It is about Gerard and Mikey Way's grandmother. They wrote it for her after she died. And also on the site all of the people who killed themselves were 12 or 13 except for the two 16 yeay old girls.
