Teens in London protest 'emo' band's 'suicide' label

AROUND 100 teenagers marched on the offices of a widely-read British tabloid on Saturday to protest at its suggestion that their favourite emo band, My Chemical Romance, encouraged suicide.

My daughter was what she called an “emo” kid. She was a bright, happy, and successful child. When she was 13, she changed. She grew darker, sullen, and withdrew from us, and her friends. She claimed that she was “emo.” She said that stood for “emotional.” He grades dropped, and she stayed in her room most of the day. This continued for months. My wife and I thought that this was just a phase that she would just “snap out of.” We were wrong. Eventually, she tried to kill herself. We were able to stop her just in time. She is now recovering and we have removed her from the emo lifestyle. As time wears on, we see more and more of our daughter. While she was in the psychiatric hospital, one of the therapists showed me the website; whatisemo.bravehost.com . Once we saw that site, we understood what happened to our daughter. If you are a concerned parent, please visit this site and inform yourself. Do not let your child join the emo subculture!

i went to that link..

i read the song lyrics page. 3/7 lyrics featured on there were MCR ones..
MCR lyrics DO NOT glorify suicide.

"And I think I'll blow my brains against the ceiling"..
ohk, to a stupid person this could seem pro 'gunning yourself' or whatever, but its followed by 8 lines of "think happy thoughts"
OBVIOUSLY theyre saying that if you feel like doing something like that, think happy thoughts and get yourself through it, because its worth living!!

so here i will list a few brilliant mcr lyrics that are helpful, and beautiful, and make people want to live..

"I'm taking back the life you stole."
"Cause the world, will never take my heart"
"We'll carry on"
"I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone"
"I encourage your smiles"
"Too young to die and my dear"
"Cause I mean this more than words can ever say. You're beautiful!"
"You're not in this alone"
"And if the world needs something better, Let's give them one more reason now"

so what if they talk a lot about death. its something we all have to live with, the knowledge that what we have is not eternal [by that i mean we will not be on this planet forever, im not disputing the exsistance of some sort of heaven, because i have no idea if i beleve in that sort of thing]

my younger sisters an 'EMO' all her friends are and she is the brightest girl in her year, she is even taking classes 2years above her so its nothing to do with the music or what they wear.

Everyone can go through a turn of depresion most people do without relising, so really the music has nothing to do with anything.

Next you will be telling me ozzy osborne encourages suicide with wine.....sorry dude's you got the wrong end of the stick so to speak.

I've seen this happen before in my school. Kids suddenly decide their emo, then go out and start cutting themselves. I saw enough ambulances at the school to send them all to the psych hospital. Keep up your denial people. The rest of us see what's going on!

Yes, I know you emo kids will get all rude. But we see what is happening. Yell and scream all you want. You can't make it go away!

I guess a lot of people consider me emo. My wardrobs just happens to be almost entirely black, I wear very heavy dark eye makeup, and I dye my hair black (and streak it blonde :P). And yes, I listen to 'emo' bands like My Chemical Romance, The Used, Tokio Hotel, Evanescence, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco and so on. Most of those bands aren't even emo XD And I'm a very happy person. I know many other people who're called/call themselves emo, and none of them self harm. It's really tiring that everyone associates emo with masochism. Most people, including most emos, don't cut.
Also, to 'Nobody in particular' from Roubaix, France, I have a couple of questions. Do you actually know any 'emos' that well? Do you know them well enough to assume everyone who listens to their style of music/designs their appearance in a similar way would cut or kill themselves? I think not. I'm not going to yell or scream or be rude, just completely ruin your point :)

Remember the punks, Goths, new wave, heavy metal, rap, Elton john. It’s just a phase? Most of us grow out of it and enjoy the music.

teenage depression has been around much longer than this bullshit emo thing
she didn't become emo, than become depressed. She became depressed and then proclaimed herself emo
all those things you said, dark, sullen, withdrew, stayed in her room, last time I check those were signs of depression
don't take your daughhters depression as 'a phase'
whats bullshit is that bands and music get blamed for this shit
its Columbine all other agian
STOP TRYING TO PIONT FINGERS
depression is normal for teens now, they didn't ask to be depressed but they are so they think that thats them so they proclaim them self emo to try and feel like they belong, or that there normal
they are but thats because many kids feel like them, feeling alone and in despair anxious something they don't understand
