ROME -- Italian police have arrested a man from Kosovo who married an 11-year old girl and fathered a child by her.

Brescia police said that they had arrested a 21-year old man on suspicion of rape and forced enslavement.

Police official Carmine Grassi said that the investigation had been launched when the girl, now 12, gave birth to a baby girl last month in a Brescia hospital.

The legal age for entering sexual relations in Italy is 14.

Grassi said that the suspect’s family had prearranged the marriage with the girl’s parents, who live in Serbia, and had paid them EUR 17,000.

The girl was illegally brought into Italy last year.

Grassi said that the girl and her daughter are now in the custody of social services.

I wrote about this yesterday in one comment here, I was thoroughly shocked when the Italian anchorman at RAI telegiornale at 8pm announced how "the Albanian had bought a 12-year old Serbian girl for 17.000 euros from her family", and she got pregnant from him, and then the alarmed doctors called the police. The man told in the police that "it was a normal habit in the family to buy a wife", and only later - obviously after telephone protests in Italy - the RAI changed the news that it was an Albanian who bought an Albanian girl from Kosovo who holds Serbian passport. I said yesterday, and repeat here again, that it is the HIGH moment for Serbia to define its borders and to define the rules to whom it gives its citizenship. Thank you again.
