Body Lay in UK Apartment for 8 Years

“How can any of us possibly understand how there could be a dead body in somebody's flat for five years, or maybe even as long as eight years, and nobody know and nobody notices, and life appears to go on as usual”

Workers responding to neighbors' complaints of a bad smell coming from an apartment in western England discovered a body that lay decomposing on a couch for years while another resident lived there, officials said Friday.

The British Broadcasting Corp. reported that neighbors of the Bristol, England apartment had been complaining for years about the stench and cleaning workers found the body. Neighbor Michael Stone told the BBC he assumed the tenant suffered from poor hygiene and even offered him air fresheners. Read more

He also had a very loyal flatmate who stayed with him all that time, despite the smell. Creepy.

I would have thought that he would be a skeleton after eight years in the open air. Wouldn't he? Why would he smell anymore?

English council flats (projects to you) never have "open air" as the tenants never open their windows and leave the heating on 24/7.

Crazy. Just shows how far people in this country go in minding their own business and to hell with everyone else.
We need lessons in socialising and being part of a community.

It just takes longer for British stink to go away .... after all .... go to some of them old colonial towns or old colleges and universities,.... the British stink is still there and it's been better then 200 years now

Wow. There must be more to this than described.
So sad. They had no one - not even neighbors to help.

When I hadn't seen my elderly neigbor for a couple of months or so I called the police to make a well-being check. No answer to the door pounding so the cop was able to get into a position where he could peer into a kitchen window where he saw freshly opened cans of cat food so we knew she was alive.(and I felt like a fool).

I don't know about dead bodies but I would think the odor would be strongest in early decomposition rather than 5 or 8 years later. Or not?

Considering the roommate was mentally impaired, the fact that no one knew about the death is not all that surprising. I'm sure people drift in and out of the building all the time, and no one thought to question the living roommate. As one neighbor said, he simply assumed the guy had bad hygiene.

I wondered too if the body would be skeletal after 5-8 years? Or maybe the awful smell was embedded in the sofa so it never really went away...gross.

That depends on whether his room-mate ate the remains, including the maggots.

yes, very few actually eat fish and chips now. They eat curries, especially disgustingly hot ones like Vindaloo, made out of god-only knows-what my Moslem immigrants who hate all the infidel customers, and kebabs, again of doubtful contents, mainly made by Turks. I see your point! the stiff was probably curried from the inside out.

People in this country are so obsesed with being social towards our over seas 'visitors' that they neglect the needs of our elderly & the unstable. It's bad enough that the locals were unaware, but what about the government? Why did no one notice that giros' ect wer'nt being cashed? if his room m8 was cashing them then maybe this should be looked into further as he obviously wouldn't then be as daft as he's making out!

What do you think of the argument that everything is outrageous to Brits these days? Lets blame the government for this too. I can just see what would happen if a government agency went to see why someone was not cashing their payment. It would be big bro then.

Arguably, Brits will do anything that avoids any responsibility themselves, then they come to Topix and moan about how terrible things are in one of the richest countries in the world.

May I ask if you have written to your MP about your concerns, formed one of these Community Councils or a neighbourhood scheme; or checked up on the elderly in your own street?

Nobody thought anything was unusual because the dead guy's decaying teeth looked no differnet than that of any living British citizen.

Teeth condition is not usually what we look at to determine if someone is alive. Our teeth are not generally bad considering that we do not put so many nasty things in our water supply. We like to turn the tap on and get water coming out. People who do look after their teeth here resent the blanket solutions proposed by some dental authorities. At least our teeth look natural and not carved from something that an elephant once grew.

A matter of pros and cons - and personal choice. When I went to one US supermarket it was impossible to buy milk that was simply pasturised. I had (at the least) to have some vitamins too.

As a matter of fact, I do keep an eye on my neighbours, I live in a lovely little Village where we all tend to look out for each other. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for inner cities & large Estates.
Also, unfortunately, if I were to voice my oppinion that the gorvernment is too busy looking after the immigrants that are entering the country, causing over population & thus a lot of vulnerable people of all ages & race are being neglected, I would be branded a racist..... Which I am NOT.
I am just concerned that considering that at least one of these men was mentally unstable, & the amount of time the deceased was there, social services or which ever government based local authority was not looking after them. There is supposed to be a government funded group, called 'care in the community', if these government people were not responsible for looking after them, who do you suggest was?
