"We're advising parents to talk with their children about not speaking with strangers. That's the word of the day," Superintendent of Schools Philip Streifer said Friday evening". That's his brilliant advice? don't talk to strangers? Come on, we can do better than that can't we. Give these kids whistles, tell them to scream "fire", tell them to run to the nearest store/gas station anything. But telling them not to talk to strangers is so lame ! Philip, it may be time to be retrained....

My comments to this incident is that kids should always most of the time get a ride to places they want to be. I also think that if a kid comes across a stranger they should quickly tell an adult so they can report it to the police.I also tink that kids should be acompanied by an adult.

The problem of hypervigilance and hyperfear is that we create children and eventually adults given to fits of paralyzing fear. Or elese we create disbelief in the potential for danger like the "boy who cried wolf".

Not everyone on the street is on the prowl for children. A simple hello and smile may be no more than that and not proof of murderous intent. Suspicious behavior is likely to be something innocuous like waiting for a friend, making a cell phone call, taking a walk, etc.

I think the article is wrong. The first potential abuduction wasn't a Stafford School student - if he lives on Vernon Street (or nearby) it would have been Hubbell School.

Did anyone consider that maybe the woman in the van was waving to tell the kid that they could cross the street?

Just think if it had been any other place other than school premises.

how can you take things so lightly? Just think if the girl had been your child?
