just to clear the FACTS up. jonpaul, his bro and some other scumbag jumped poor gareth as he was walking along minding his own business. i don't care if you don't believe it but the truth will come out in the trial and whoever seems to think this Pope is so saintly will be left very red faced. Gareth is a lovely bloke and there are loads of people backing me up, a true diamond. At least a few more grannies can sleep safer in their beds now that jonpaul is off our streets. Free Gareth!

I must admit I will never read a paper in the same way again. I am not going to speak ill of the dead or anything, but... I have never heard such bias crap in my life. The papers ought to employ some real reporters, because the rubbish I have read does not do any one of the local papers justice. I can write a story for them if that is all they want! I feel sorry for Gareth, I know that he is a lovely person, may have got in a few scrapes from time to time, but he never intended on killing anyone. The fact of the matter is, someone has died, personally I am grateful it's not Gareth, as I think that may have been intended or does everyone carry knives around with them nowadays? However, it must be remembered, that there is a mum out there who does not have her little boy anymore, whether he was good or bad. And I know that they will want to remember the good things and they have every right to, just so long as the truth is told in court! We can all be angry, some want justice for Jonpaul, and some want justice for Gareth. Gareth will wake up and know everyday for the rest of his life that he has killed someone and he will have to come to terms with that, it cannot be a nice feeling, but he knows the truth and he can live with that and it should make him feel a little better! Goodluck gareth, you won't believe the support out here for you!

About time! It's great to hear from someone else who supports Gareth. Whilst true of the sympathy one must hold for his mother, it is still unacceptable the lies his brother was more than happy to tell the newspapers. Also, not meaning to insinuate anything but isn't it funny how in the paper released reporting the murder, the family made damn sure it was known a collection had ALREADY been set up. To be honest, my sympathies lie only with Gareth's mum and his family. You are correct that Gareth has plenty of support but it is just brilliant to hear someone voicing it instead of the comments bombarding a certain website about saint preece. I just hope Gareth knows we are all right behind him every step of the way and I anticipate the day the truth is revealed in court!

His brother's lies, hide his responsibility in it. It cannot be a nice feeling knowing that a fight you started and encouraged ended up the way it did, with your little brother dead.

Gareth was 19 at the time and after panicking and acting erratically as anyone would do in his situation he calmed down and handed himself in. That’s why they ruled out a custodial sentence and said they were imposing a community punishment order. If Gareth was such a 'vicious criminal' he would have got a harsher sentence. The magistrates like most people with more than one brain cell (this excludes you of course...just in case you couldn't work that out) recognised how sweet and lovely Gareth is. So by writing about Gareth’s incident in 2003 you’ve just made yourself look a right muppet because everyone knows what really happened. Your editing of the story is highly laughable – you should go and work for a newspaper or something! And your character profile of Gareth, though utter crap, is highly creative – maybe you could write fantasy novels! Just a suggestion. At least what Gareth did was an accident and yes he acted immaturely but he panicked and it was something totally out of character. I know who I would rather bump into down a dark alley; the person who would give you the shirt of his own back and yes, did knock someone down, but not in a meditated attack but because of a bloody faulty car. Someone who was very sorry for his actions and since has not done anything wrong. At least this one incident was a blip on an otherwise amazing person rather than someone renowned for being a ‘petty criminal’.‘Pope’ chose to commit these crimes that earn him this title and he chose to go and jump Gareth with his brother and another pal. Gareth did not walk around with that fence post in his hand or deliberately seek him out to do this. It was self-defence; I can’t believe in this day and age one cannot even defend himself when jumped upon by three men. If he had just lain down and taken a beating, who knows, maybe it would have been his funeral (cue: some pathetic insult in your response about how you wish it was etc). You seem to be living in some fairyland where ‘Pope’(it seems almost blasphemous to call him that!) was some loveable rogue, just a petty criminal. You may like to gloss over his personality and actions throughout his lifetime as these things but how you can claim them after knowing the actual facts of this incident is astonishing - he was a twat and you know it. But please do carry on spreading your rubbish about how lovely he was because it will make it even sweeter when the truth comes out in the trial. You may have been able to tell the story of Gareth and that soldier in such a way that paints him as some brute (not unlike Mr Charman may I add) but there will be no chance of you twisting this story come the trial. Why do you think Gareth hasn’t entered a plea: there isn’t even enough evidence for the courts to decide whether he should be on trial for murder! Oh, and you think I should rot in hell? I’m sorry but I think that vacancy has already been filled by ‘Pope’.

Sorry to dissapoint you Dan, but fortunately the law is constructed by educated people, which is the reasoning behind the murder charge being dropped. Gareth is not a thug or a mindless killer and I do not understand how you can possibly believe that Gareth deserves to rot in prison for a crime such as 'self defence'. You state that Jonpaul was not a violent man, so why did he, Ben Charman and some other undiserable being, jump Gareth the evening when that tragic accident took place. Knowing these facts and that these three men had actually been heard planning their attack on Gareth earlier that evening leads me to question your mental well-being. I believe it is obvious from your post that you are a very messed up individual and need to seek help for your anger issues. The words you write seem unstable and it is questionable who in fact the sick a***hole is. Yes you have a right to be angry that you have lost a friend but believe it or not it was not premeditated, it was an accident and Gareth should dot be held responsible for all the blame, he defended himslef as anyone else would.

I think that after making himself look an absolute twat Dan is too humiliated to write back!! I can’t wait till Gareth is vindicated and I can’t wait to see their faces!! I expect that this weeks Wiltshire Times will have them crying their crocodile tears wanting sympathy which is something I find hard to give. They got themselves into this mess. I can’t believe that they were overheard planning their attack – it shouldn’t shock me but I can’t get over how sick this really is. I know that they started on him whilst he was alone etc., but I’m astonished that they planned it and everything. They must have known where he was going to be and waited for him or followed him, I just thought they might have seen him walking along, hidden and then jumped him. Do you actually know who overheard this and do the police know? The more I hear the more angry I get. I have written Gareth a letter and told him about the support he has out here, though I expect it’s of little consolation. By the time it properly does get to court it’ll already be like a year of his life that he’ll never get back and then there’s the sentence on top of that – and it wasn’t even his bloody fault!!! I hope Ben and all Pope’s little cronies get what’s coming to them. If you’re not in contact is there anything you would like me to pass on to Gareth?

paulette where you there on that night were you? i dont know why people have got to write nasty shit about someone who is dead and cant defend himself. yeah lets wait for the trial to come up and for justice to be done for pope. cuz gareth deliberatly ripped that fence post off and walked back to pope and hit him round the back of the head if you call that self defence then your brain must be non exsistent. gareth is a murderer so just accept it.
