who else is sick to death of Titanic stories? And why is there a big centenary celebration? How about all the ships that didn't sink on the first voyage? The whole thing is nothing to be proud about - a badly-made ship, a rushed job, a captain who took risks and went too fast on the wrong route, and not enough lifeboats.

Gee, you're insulting hundreds of people's deaths.

The sinking of the Titanic was a landmark in transport history and a waking up call for shipping in general. The disaster shook the imagination of millions of people at the time. It's quite right to remember it by commemorating the 100th anniversary of this tragedy.

It certainly is a year packed full of British events

I don't get all the hype around the Titanic. The Lusitania was a much more tragic sotry.....

The losses on the Titanic (1513) were more than those of the Lusitania (1153) and they may well have suffered longer. In any case, I don't think there is an easy barrometer measurement of suffering.

True I just think the cause of the Titanic sinking was human error, while the sinking of the Lusitania was a German attack. I just meant tragic in so far as the Lusitania was minding it's own business and was sunk by a U-Boat, while the Titanic disaster was caused by a catalogue of errors....

the Titanic disaster was easily avoidable.
IF---- The Captain had taken a southerly route had slowed down when in an icefield had not been under orders to break a record the ship had been better built out of better quality steel and there had been more lifeboats.
But to make a big media event nearly every year out of it is just getting too much.

What about the German ship sunk by the Russians while trying to save civilians from East Prussia during WW2.About 6000 people lost their lives.I think the ship was called the Wilhelm Gustlav.
