I know a person, an American, who toured the Chernobyl site about 20 years ago. Since then he's lost his hair and most of his teeth and his memory is fading fast. However, he was almost 70 when he took that tour, so he would be about 90 now!

What is not funny is that 99.9% of the NIMBYs will use that data to "prove" their hysterical points about Nuclear Engineering (a subject about which they know nothing but are more than willing to pontificate upon).

Just as Ukraine keeps the Holodomor issue alive as a remembrance for the world to avoid government tyranny, Chernobyl will be an eternal reminder for everyone about the dangers associated with nuclear energy and even nuclear warfare. It is Ukraine's destiny it seems , to be an early warning to the world about these issues. also, the benefit to Ukraine economy will be in the millions of dollars, per year in nuclear tourism and in eco tourism also , as the 100km 'No Go' zone around Priyat and Chernobyl has resulted in a Mecca of resurgence of native wildlife , that had previously disappeared including wild boar, bear, deer and thousands of bird species and fish . They are all doing well . I would like to visit soon. This is fabulous and is supported by everyone in Ukraine and internationally as well. The UN and the USA supports Pripyat and Chernobyl in becoming a world heritage site in perpetuity .The thinking people all over the world are very supportive of the Chernobyl Remembrance Project and related Natural reserve initiatives as the article very well illustrates. Naturally , the tours will be safely run and the radiation levels will be monitered and minimized, with HAZ MAT - Radiation suits . Idi Ukraina ! It is truly an excellent idea --and will draw the adventurous and scientifically inclined who want an exciting ecotourism opportunity.

Sticking your neck out wrote: <quoted text> Whats you feelings on Nuclear power?,, Fission is the next best thing to nuclear fusion. Since Fusion looks like it is quite a distance in the future I think we should go for fission power. With the exception of Chernobyl, which was mostly a case of bad design and faulty operations, there have been very little in the way of problems. The NIMBY crowd likes to yell about Three MIle Island. What they neglect to say is that the system's fail-safe system worked as designed. They shut the system down before an accident could happen. To object to this is like objecting to brakes in a car because they stopped the car before it went over a cliff but the passenger bumped their nose on the dash. If we can keep politics, including the hysterical yelling by those who know nothing about nuclear power but are not afraid to yell about it, out of the mix we cold become energy independant very quickly. I think that renewable energy such as wind, solar, tidal, etc. has promise but must be supplemental to a Fission based power generating system. Let me close with an anecdote about the yellers. A few years ago, at a school open house, one of these people was holding forth on Nuclar Reactors. She stated loudly that whe would not live within a hundred miles of "one of those things". You should have seen her face when I told her that for the last ten years she had lived within 10 miles of the Black Canyon Research Reactor operated by Atomics International and had suffered no ill effects. A little knowledge is a dangeraous ting and those who object to Nuclear Reactors certainly have very little knowledge about the subject.

The Chernobyl reactor was a Soviet knock off of a antiquated old French design that they then “Simplified” even more to aid in construction and require less critical resources to complete. This made the melt down a matter of “When” in stead of “If” as it was a recipe for disaster. Modern reactors are all equipped with “Triple Redundancy” features on all systems with even more safety’s on the critical systems that “Scram” the Reactor to prevent the inevitable “Operator Error” that happens with time and compliancy {Human Nature} Moscow kept pushing the plant to produce more and more power with out “Upgrading” the existing unit,,, Soviets’ were taught that if they received a order from a superior that it was followed and not questioned so the out put and strain on the Reactor was always pushed to its operational limit and beyond with out the clearly ridicules’ orders being questioned. This system of Government breeds this type of disaster.

The system bred dimwits, unskilled operators who made an error and the reactor collapsed. Who was that operator, do you still remember ?

Chernobyl disaster resulted from a group of young university graduates taking control away from technicians that were operating the reactor correctly. The young engineers wanted to observe operating characteristics at different setting and didn't realize that the reactor would not return to normal.
Chernobyl wasn't perfect either. Had no containment dome.
A number of safer options are available, particularly "gas cooled reactors" that stop automatically when overheated.
