I've nothing against Leno, but I actually applaud the affiliate's decision. Someone has to stand up for what is clearly an erosion of network drama. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's preferable. The show also got a lot of bad press this week from those who are bemoaning the end of what used to be the "golden hour" for drama programming with the end of ER. NBC and the networks need to realize that just programming any old thing isn't always going to be acceptable. UPN learned this the hard way when it got to the point where local affilliates were so turned off by the network's programming that they preferred to air local sports instead. And we saw what happened to UPN soon after that trend began.

I THINK BOSTON IS GOING TO LOOSE, I DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO LIKES Conan O'Brien. MY WIFE AND I WILL BE WATCHING JAY AT 10 AND DAVE AT 11:30. I KNOW NBC IS IN LAST PLACE BUT TO LOOSE JAY WOULD HAVE BE THE LAST STRAW. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS JAY WILL HAVE TO CLEAN UP THE JOKES A LITTLE.

alex,

i agree with your points, but the affiliate isn't doing it for the reasons of saving networks 'golden hour' they're doing it because it will be cheaper to do a local news show and they could possibly make more money from advertising. its all about money with networks wether they be national or local.

I'll watch Jay and other network depending on what they run at 10:00. I won't watch Conan. This is really where NBC messed up. They should have left Jay on the Tonight Show and Conan where he was. The locals are learning from the Silverman crew...sacrifice real entertainment for whatever is cheap and brings higher profit. They too will lose viewers and further the decline of the network.

Not only is WHDH making a mistake, but NBC is making an even BIGGER mistake by eliminating 5 hours of original drama from its schedule. When will they learn?

I wonder how hard the Boston affiliate will fight NBC on this one. I always thought that afilliates had the right to reject network programs that they didn't want to air.

I live in the Salt Lake City area where the uptight conservatives rule. The NBC affiliate here does not air Saturday Night Live, so NBC gives it to our local CW station instead. Similarly, the new Osbournes show on FOX is not shown in prime time, but rather postponed until 12:05 am. And back in the early 90's there were a number of ABC affiliates who refused to show NYPD Blue.

I don't see why the Boston station couldn't just have it's news on from 10-11 and then show Jay from 11-12, pushing Conon back a half hour.

Being from the Boston area, I couldn't have been more pleased with WHDH's decision. Airing Jay Leno at 10 o'clock 5 days a week has got to be the stupidest thing NBC has ever come up with. It is never going to last, so why fight the affiliate?!!? And then what is NBC going to put in its spot? 5 hours of prime time tv is a lot to fill. Maybe they can come up with 2 more Law and Orders. Oh yeah and to top it off Leno is from the Boston area...hahaha

I say, more power to you, Boston. Stand up for what you believe in and keep Leno off the air! I'd certainly rather watch news than Leno.

Right on, WHDH! I'd love to see NBC's moronic decision to replace five hours of drama with five hours of Leno blow up in its face.

The guys running NBC right now don't have a clue as to what they're doing. Why do they think anyone cares about how much money they're saving by putting Leno on at 10:00 instead of entertainment programs?

Local stations need to maximize ratings, so the network's costs are completely immaterial to them. This Boston station needs a good rating at 10:00 so that their 11:00 newscast will get a good rating, and they can then charge higher advertising prices and make money. Why doesn't NBC understand that.

NBC did the same thing with Knightrider this season. Every article that appeared about that low-rated show had the NBC executives proudly proclaiming that it was the cheapest show in TV because they got Ford to pay for part of the costs for using their Mustang as the "star". Nobody cares!!!

Maximize your ratings, NBC. Your costs for doing that are your own business.

This doesn't surprise me any. Jay Leno's views are so much differant than the liberal's views. Even though Boston is where the Tea Party was held that helped start the American Revolution that gave us our freedom I don't think Boston is the same today.

I think that WHDH-TV, Channel 7, the current NBC station in Boston will most likely lose its NBC Affiliation to WCVB-TV, Channel 5. Sunbeam may very well be selling Channel 7 in Boston to the Walt Disney Company, which owns and operates ABC Television and Radio. Hearst-Argyle may very well be interested of buying NBC for a price tag of $10,000,000,000.00 and if Hearst-Argyle gets its way, it may switch all of its CBS and ABC Stations to the NBC Television Network, according to my predictions.
WHDH-TV, Channel 7 may soon be switching back to the ABC Television Network in the near future by airing all ABC shows for the first time in 37 years, which was since Sunday, March 19th, 1972.
WCVB-TV, Channel 5 may very well be the new home of the NBC Television Network for the very first time since Sunday, March 19, 1972, while WHDH-TV, Channel 7 may very well be the new home of the ABC Television Network for the first time in 37 years.

WHDH is making a big mistake. Among other points,
Jay is a hometown boy, growing up in the Boston
suburb of Andover. They will garner some ill will
from folks who are proud of Leno's success. And let's
face it, NBC can't afford to let this stand because
then it sets a precedent for other stations to try it.

WHDH will be forced to take the Leno show or
NBC WILL find a new affiliate to make an example out
of them.

I would like NBC Universal to BUY WHDH-TV in Boston and whether viewers in the Boston TV Market like it or not.JAY LENO WILL AIR AT 10:00PM and NBC Universal would be the only hope in order to avert WHDH-TV losing it's affiliation with the Peacock Network.

Hey Bill, just because you don't know anyone who likes Conan doesn't mean NO-ONE likes Conan - he did very well on Late Night. Man, ya gotta love the dim bulbs who can't see outside their little rooms. Oh yeah, turn off the Caps Lock Bill, on the internet it means you're shouting, which makes you even more obnoxious. And a bad speller. It's LOSE, not LOOSE. You've been schooled.

I think the exact opposite should happen. I think WHDH should make an example of NBC. If NBC wants to play hardball, WHDH should oblige and yank its affiliation preemptively. Someone should show NBC what morons they're being if they want to be so pig-headed about it.

I'm still on the fence about the 10PM Leno thing, but the way NBC is headed I wouldn't be surprised if a station could do better with infomercials against NBC's lineup.

Oh yeah, Bill, this isn't 1950, you're not bangin' your words out on a manual Olivetti. You don't need to put hard returns at the end of each line, that just defeats the auto-formatting on the Web. It's really not necessary, and makes you look ancient (unless that's what you're going for...). Just continue typing and your computer will wrap for you, only put returns at the end of a paragraph, and you won't look like you're trying to write poetry.

Man I'm takin' everybody to school today...

Kudos to that station for standing up to NBC's cancellation of its 10pm slot.
