MB's NBC to get some air

Finally REAL HD in the MB market. I can utilize my HD TV to its fullest capacity now, at least on one local channel

Not so fast, sports fans. One glaring omission is that the new station will only broadcast sports on the weekends, leaving five days with no sports coverage. Check their own web page - one weekend sports anchor and no sports director. This is a total misreading of the market by WMBF. Local fans used to getting a daily dose of Gamecocks coverage from WIS and Tar Heels on WECT will be left with zilch, not even the lame local coverage we get on the weekdays from our CBS and ABC affiliates. Not a very good trade for local college sports fans. Sure, they might have high def, but the sports coverage will be in low dose. Score local sports fans the losers in this game - another score you won't see on WMBF.

I for one am not a sports fan. I don't hate sports. But I get annoyed at how much coverage sports gets for every broadcast.

What time will the newscasts be on at on the WMBF.

Maybe they didn't misread. If I can get a 30 minute news broadcast where 10 of those isn't taken up by non-news sports, then that may interest me. I get my election coverage from national channels, I get my sports from sports channels.
Obviously though people won't be interested, and they'll stay with WPDE or WBTW. |

We prefer the Columbia station since we are gamecock fans and they get no coverage here. How many stations does little bitty MB need, there could not be enough advertising dollars to go around to support 3 local stations. And some of us like to hear sports and think there is not nearly enough sports coverage in this town.

You hit the nail on the head. NO way is there enough advertising revenue to go around for 3 stations. There are NO businesses here that are advertising other then car dealerships. Most "mom and pop" businesses can't afford the rates. This is NOT a major metropolitan area with diverse businesses to go after the "advertising bucks". Heck, AVX is one of the biggest employers here and they don't do any advertising because of the type of business they are. Cable advertising is much cheaper. The major hotels/restaurants don't advertise in a local market. So where is the money going to come from? If no sports, this is because they are trying to save the salaries. If they can generate enough in time, maybe the you will see a sports person or two. However, it would not surprise me to see a couple of years from now we read that one of the stations closes up. When you hear of a current station letting news people go, that will be the writing on the wall. I have seen this happen before in small markets. They have to go with the cheapest possible help they can to stay on the air. The reporters and anchors most likely for this new station will be very young and getting their start in the business. This is typical for any new station startup. Maybe will read about "price wars" in the paper for the local new stations. It will be a good thing for people who are looking to advertise in the local TV media. They might be able to "name their price" for advertising. |

"Want to watch?
*WMBF will be channel 10 on cable, 805 on Time Warner HD, 806 on HTC HD, and over the air and on Dish satellite at channel 32. *NBC affiliate stations WIS and WECT will discontinue on cable and satellite." You decide to leave out DirecTV? Even if it's not being offered on DirecTV, at least mention that. |
This will be a big test for the Myrtle Beach market.
WMBF, you are shooting yourselves in the foot if you are not covering sports 7 days a week. We want Gamecocks, Tigers, Tarheels, Coastal Carolina and High School Football. Why the #&%& do you broadcast in HD and no sports coverage? |

Is it me, or do they have a massive staff?

Did my own research, Lisa. It's easy, isn't it? The DirecTV feed won't be up until Oct. 1, until then we deal with WIS. Interesting to note that HTC is not mentioned on their site. I wonder if that's just an oversight. |

I don't think it is.

Why did Time Warner cable eliminate two channels and replace them with one? Don't blame the "must carry" rules. I want to see the Columbia station at least. What a gyp. |

An article that says they are working on a deal with HTC. So either they've worked it out and haven't updated their site, or they haven't worked out the deal, yet, if ever. But it went live today, so I wonder what people think, if they are even receiving it. I do believe they aren't doing news until after the Olympics, but I could be wrong. |

I will Miss WIS out of columbia...State Politics and State News...But most important GAMECOCKS
Looking At their Staff on their Web Site...No sports director, no sports anchor, No GAMECOCKS

The area is losing major statewide coverage from WIS. There are already two local stations to cover local news, in the past it was really great that everyone could keep up with news from the capital city. Nothing against the new station but they should keep WIS as well.
Yes, but WIS has a record of reporting incorrect news for our area.
Such as when the Moody Blues were here way back for the debut of their ride at the HRP's little tour building, the WIS broadcast made it seem as if you could go to the HRP tomorrow and ride the ride. Far from serving the local community if you can't get something that mundane correct. |
At 8 AM channel 805 was dark on TWC Digital, so was 806 (the WIS secondary channel). Hopefully it will be on by the time I get home from work...I would like to see the opening day of the Olympics in high def.
