Wow, the fifth season hasn't even premiered yet and Rescue Me gets 18 more episodes totaling 88 episodes, when the sixth season ends. FX really loves this show.

That's because we're supposed to understand what a huge hit it is for FX because they ordered so many more.

Of course, it's yet another case of trying to build a Hit in the papers" as opposed to having a real hit.

It's probably both. Because FX doesn't have any actual hits in there new series (Sons of Anarchy, Damages) they want to build up anticipation for Rescue Me and order another season. Similiar to what they did last year with Nip/Tuck.

It's a practice that actually hampers FX from being on the same playing field as USA and TNT. They keep hammering at shows the audience isn't interested in.

Why that is, we can only guess. My guess is that they feel their jobs are safe as long as there is a perception of "buzz" in the press and nobody at News Corp. looks too closely at the ratings (which are a lot harder to dig up than broadcast ratings).

I'd be curious to know what your guess is.:)

Basically yeah. Renewing Nip/tuck and Rescue Me, the only 2 shows that do somewhat well for them in the ratings does keep everyones job safe. But those shows will have reached 100 and 92 episodes respectively. This is the point where FX needs to look for new shows that actually attract high ratings. Niptuck and Rescue Me will end very soon but what can actually hurt people's jobs is keeping shows like Sons of Anarchy and Damages. They did a good job by axing Dirt and The Riches (even though personally I liked The Riches) when they did but they need to do the same with other shows.

It's funny how different things look if you look short-term or long-term.

Short-term, agricultural workers in the Netherlands were throwing their wooden shoes (sabots) into the works of newfangled wind-powered wheat thrashing machines to protest their losing their jobs.

In the long term this kind of mechanization has made all of us incredibly richer over a short period of time.

And Denis Leary is a one-note actor, pissed off or getting there. Why he keeps getting roles is beyond me.

The same reason anybody else in Hollywood gets jobs nowadays...it all depends on who you know. Denis Leary apparently knows a whole lot of people. :P

Leary works because hes by far the best actor on T.V. & "Rescue Me" is by far the best drama.(Sorry BSG) Its not a pretty show & thats the point but then I suppose you all think a bunch of good looking doctors in love is cutting edge programming.

Sorry, but Battlestar Galactica is very far from being "the best" show on TV. It's not even a good show (and the ratings back me up on that!).

If this show is such a "tentpole" show, as the FX exec is quoted as saying, why has it taken the show two years to return to the network? I liked the show and really got into it, but then it disappeared from the network after the fourth season in 2007. Since then I have moved on and don't really care about getting involved in the show again, just to have it disappear, again. FX screwed me on this show and on the show "Over There". I have no desire to go back.

The answer is that it isn't such a "tentpole". FX likes to pretend they have hits, even though they showed with Nip-Tuck they could get actual good ratings.

The only reason it dissapeared was because of the writers strike. The fourth season ended in summer 2007 and Rescue Me was renewed for 22 episodes 1 day after the strike started and FX wanted to air all 22 episodes continuously. So they decided to create minisodes for 2008 and puch the new season to 2009.

So the only shows that are good have good ratings? Rena you standards are way too low. I hope you don't pick your friends that way.

I really don't want to go into a detailed explanation yet again, but the short version is: if a show is highly promoted and low-rated, it's highly unlikely it's all that good (see Mad Men), if a show is highly rated and doesn't use constant hype and stunting, then chances are it's not highly-rated for no particular reason.

I am not an elitist like a lot of so-called journalists who seem to think that a show has to be rejected by the Plebs to be any good.

On the contrary I do believe in people's wisdom and taste as a group (and in general).

As a personal aside, what made you feel compelled to attack my personal life? Its uncalled for and rude and really doesn't make you look all that good.:(

The writers strike was once again a convenient excuse not to program a highly hyped yet ratings challenged show, IMO.

Well who knows if production was even started on the series. And FX did want to air all 22 episodes week after week.

Typically cable shows are produced much in advance of air time, but you're right, it may not have been the case with Rescue Me.:)
