yes, house was about to be cancelled. a site called "tv by the numbers" will confirm that "bones" was on the chopping block as well. hugh laurie even made a comment thanking a.i. for saving it on craig ferguson. ghost whisperers numbers ARE down. Moonlight WAS great and the ex list sucks. i have spoken, end of story.

okay, not end of story. i have done some research and found out that the woman who cancelled moonlight, nina tassler, is friends with the creator of the ex list. it is beginning to seem as if the ratings had little to do with it. she cancelled the show for a friend's show. i guess what bothers me is that les moonves and nina tassler had pretty much said that moonlight would get a second season and then-- wham-- lied and cancelled it. the ex list will get cancelled and now what? moonlight should not have been cancelled. okay, it wasn't CSI, but it was doing decently. and you need only take a look at sites like hey neilsen, tv by the numbers and tv guide, not to mention cbs.com to see how devoted moonlight fans remain. when is the last time this kind of uproar was created? we are not going to go away. not next month, not next year, not five years from now. unfair is unfair. is moonlight coming back? of course not. the actors have moved on. is there any real point to this? of course not. but i will never stop being vocal about how this show was robbed. and moonlight fans like me feel the same. i urge you to check out a few sites and see how we feel. if you feel strongly about something, it's your duty to spread the message. that's the end unto itself. you can call me names, you can insist i'm wrong, but i will continue to spread the word, as will other moonlight fans. sorry about the "i have spoken" but well... i have.

They are exactly the same and slightly overperforming.
The show's highest ratings were during the first season 10 million + it even reached 11 million at times.
Numbers - however is down.
the Ex-list doesn't belong and Moonlight was not great either.
Ghost Whisperer is doing fine and I have a feeling that Numbe3rs is only drastically down because it's lead in The Ex List is dragging it down. It seems that CBS has yet to find the right show to air between Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs.

Bones was on the bubble for renewal. But given the state of Fox's schedule at that time, nobody ever seriously expected it to be canceled.

And there's a difference between American Idol making House a hit and American Idol saving Fox. Fox was never at any point contemplating canceling House.

And Eydie, "Moonlight" was CBS' lowest rated drama. Period. Why would a network keep its lowest rated drama? Why would a network keep its lowest rated drama when it also canceled multiple shows with larger audiences. In the case of Shark, CBS canceled a show that had several million more viewers and had proven its ability to switch time slots with at least a limited amount of success.

From a business point of view, CBS had *NO* reason to keep "Moonlight." There isn't any justification that "Moonlight" fans can give for why, from a practical point of view, CBS should have kept its lowest rated drama on the air without any sign of audience growth. LOWEST RATED DRAMA (and I'm not counting stuff they'd already canceled like "Viva Laughlin").

It's a blind taste-test: If I told you that you have a network averaging 10.4 million viewers per week and that on one night that network airs shows averaging 8.7 million, 7.5 million and 9.17 million. If you wanted to strengthen that night, what would you do?

You're making sentimental arguments and arguments based on semi-facts. CBS removed a low-rated show from a high-rated schedule. PERIOD. That they replaced it with a WORSE show and a LOWER-RATED show is a different thing entirely.

I think they may just keep The Ex List just A) to let it the show grow and B) because CBS doesn't want people to just say "I told you so for cancelling Moonlight". In Shark's case the series was still performing well but CBS just needed to get rid of something to make room on the schedule.

As for the cancellation of Moonlight, the ratings were slipping the production costs were high and CBS just wanted 2 move on and try something new. One network can't keep every show on its schedule.

well dan, that could be. i found out that the reason, or the excuse nina tassler used to cancel moonlight was that the ex list was written by a friend of hers. so i believe that cancelling moonlight wasn't so much about ratings. i think it was personal. i will continue to be vocal. it is every moonlight fans duty to just keep plugging away. alex o'laughlin, the star of moonlight is still under contract to cbs. they want to find another vehicle for him, but it won't be the same. however, i will definitely be there if and when he gets a new show.

alex, you totally did. it was so good! it made me cry. i won't tell you unless you really want to know, i don't want to spoil it for you. is it available online by chance? i hope they cancel the ex list soon as well. i feel that if we moonlight fans just keep being vocal and refuse to let moonlight die, at least we'll succeed in annoying a few people.

Oh, I'd watch the Ex-List if it didn't have such a stupid premise.

A lot of people didn't give Moonlight the chance it deserved. Granted, we don't all like the same things, but I don't think it was given a fair chance. So many things were working against it, not the least of which was CBS's meddling and cheap attitude.

there is a segment that likes the ex list. these people are the people i spend my life avoiding. they aren't bad people, they just seem silly to me. the things they find deep are just trivial to me. they read romance novels, i read murder mysteries. we live on different planets. fortunately, these people aren't enough to keep the ex list afloat.

I agree that CBS will never admit their error in cancelling Moonlight. With the growth in production of movies, books, and TV shows about vampires, it was very shortsighted of CBS. Some are calling 2008 the "Year of the Vampire" in the entertainment industry. CBS had a jumpstart on the genre, but, decided to go with some show that Nina Tassler was pitched in a conversation over the phone. These were her words in an interview about the fall schedule. And it's not even an original show - just a knockoff of a successful Israeli comedy.
This show is doing so poorly right out of the gate, that there is a promotion to send flowers to an ex on "Ex Day" which is next week. It seems like CBS is already starting the heavy promotion for a lost cause. It's a pity that they didn't try harder to promote Moonlight, a show that actually HAD a fanbase. That's what really stinks about the whole thing. And, yes, I'm still pretty riled up about it.
I know that the big nets won't care. Afterall, I am only one lowly viewer from their coveted demographic. But,I have a TV ban for ALL CBS shows for the forseable future. I ain't watchin' squat on The Eye - just because they made me feel like I didn't matter. Most of my viewing leans toward the cable networks, anyway. But I took a chance on CBS last year. I won't make that mistake again.
Amen sister!

Moonlight had very strong ratings despite being a first year show during a strike season. The strike temporarily slowed the growth of the show's audience. Moonlight definitely garnered high enough ratings, during a strike, to warrant a Second Season.

CBS gave Jericho another shot and got screwed. I doubt they'll give any other fan favorite shows a second chance for a long time (which is a shame). Jericho ruined it for all of us rabid Moonlight fans. I knew Jericho wouldn't succeed. And Moonlight probably would have. Everyday (while Moonlight was still on), I'd learn of another friend or family member of mine who was hooked on the show.

Out of all of last year's new (or returning, for that matter) shows that I was worried about being canceled, Moonlight wasn't even on my radar. I was thinking...It's a People's Choice Winner for Best New Drama, It survived a strike season with above average numbers, It helped helped CBS consistently win Friday nights, It has a large female and cult following, The entertainment industry is calling 2008 the "year of the vampire" (so who wouldn't want to be the leader of a trend), It had amazing actors with amazing chemistry, etc, etc, etc.

Let's face it, CBS could have been a trailblazer in "the year of the vampire". This 35 year-old, married, mother of three, who makes practically every buying decision for my household has moved on. I am no longer watching CBS! Advertisers, are you hearing me?

They had the right show! Moonlight debuted during a strike season. Of course numbers were down, but they would have rebounded. No Doubt!

You're comparing apples to oranges! Shark (which I watched) aired on Thursday's and Sunday's (two of TV's most watched nights). Moonlight aired on friday night's (one of TV's least watched nights). Strictly by the numbers, Shark did out score Moonlight. But the fact that it only ourscored Moonlight by a few million viewers when it aired on Thursdays and Sundays, technically makes it a less popular show. You really need to factor in the day of the week that a show airs!

Plus, a lot of CBS's other dramas are showing their age. It won't be long before those shows start losing ratings and need to be replaced. I stopped watching all of the CSI's a few years ago. Again, Moonlight scored very well for a first year show debuting during a strike season.

On a side note, did anyone notice how thiis story is still listed on the first page? It seems like this Moonlight discussion is a hot topic.

and tvlovinmom, it's our job to make sure moonlight stays on the first page. it's because of fans like us who refuse to let this die. remember to boycott any show in moonlight's time slot. it's easy to boycott when the show is crap like the ex list, it'll be harder when the show is good. but cbs needs to know that any show in that time slot will fail.

i am over the moon right now! i just read that the ex list has been cancelled, effective immediately. well done, moonlight fans! our boycott worked. however, just because we won this battle does not mean we won the war. it is now time to begin boycotting the next show to appear in moonlight's time slot.

They just say it has been "pulled" but everyone knows that the show is cancelled and sooner than even I expected. After 4 episodes and horrible ratings, CBS has put an end to The Ex List. Theres no point honestly in boycotting every show that comes in that slot. CBS isn't gunna bring back Moonlight, they'll just move on to another show. I think either Flashpoint or Harper's Island will be the permanent replacement for The Ex List. Flashpoint actually performed well when it premiered on Fridays in the summer and CBS has 17 episodes of it to air so they could go with that.
