OMG wrote: Aw, gee, and I was looking forward to seeing the Palin-family on his show. Let's see, the Plain-clan, Sarah - knocked-up as a teenager while unwed, went to six schools in as many years and wound up getting her bachelors from a po-dunk school in po-dunk Idaho.'Worked' as a sports' caster in a po-dunk Alaskan-village - on and off {mostly off} while she had four kids. She served as a mayor in that po-dunk Alaska-village for a little while and then - this former po-dunk 'beauty-queen', ceased the opportunity to bite the hand that fed her to take over the Governor's position in the state {only just} that has more reindeer than people. Having made the decision to bring a Downs' child into the world {her fifth kid}, she then decided that her commitement to 'family values'- what with a special needs infant at home and a 7 year old as well, translated into her fundamental{ist} ability to become Vice President and - possibly, President/Commander and Chief of the United States. All the while, her unwed daughter of 17 years of age is now already 5 months pregnant and her teenage son is off to join the battle in Afghanistan. Yep, if EVER there was a family that's suited to appear on the Jerry Springer Show it's the Palins. White American Trash from po-dunk nowheresville. Now, this is a potential first-family for American we can all get behind --- Give me a break!!! No surprise that you're a Springer watcher. Hilarious!

Ahhh yes, another article that denigrates trailer-dwellers and stereotypes hillbillies. The last American cultural sector for whom the media elite fail to treat with political correctness. I wonder if the reporter would have used the "N-word," "D-word," or "K-word if she happened to see a Springer episode that featured African-Americans, lesbians, or a Jewish family battling it out. The vast majority of what the elite refer to as "hillbillies" or "rednecks" are hard-working common folks -- city, town, and rural -- who are proud of those monikers because it implies regional pride. Hillbillies are not all toothless banjo-pickers from the north Georgia hills any more than every young professional living on the north side is a Yuppie.

Fine, stop the circus atmosphere, the transvestite puppets and such. I still will not be watching. I'm tired of the Jerry Springer Show's recurring theme of cheating idiots. I once submitted a suggestion: America's Fattest Male and Female Stripper. I don't know if they ever made that idea happen, but I'd watch that episode. Good luck Jerry...

I've never seen a complete Jerry Springer show in my life. But I take exception to the headline "hillbillies". The people on these shows are white trash! Hillbillies are generally from the mountains of Kentucky, the Virginias, Tennesee and Carolinas.
Rednecks are strictly country folk. Rednecks aren't tacky.
White trash can be from anywhere and that is what Jerry Springer has brought to his show.

Padmolik talks about Springer in a clinical fashion, as though the Springer show did have merit. It was the lowest level of entertainment possible, and Springer pimped it. Northwestern made an unwise choice by inviting him. I wouldn't walk across the street to talk to him. He is a fraud.

I await the day the show is dragged off the air. It's a farce and an embarassment - as it has been from day one. People should be ashamed for watching or participating in it.

Professional Football, Fox News, Law & Order, are only reasons I own television. Thank God, I also own remote-control.

The article didn't really seem to have an agenda one way or the other - it was (gasp) just reporting. If you want to identify a source for your perceived 'denigration', look to the show itself: it has been giving - no, more likely, it has been reveling in giving - a bad name to various lower socioeconomic and/or non-urban elite groups for over a decade. It has encouraged all the insidious and generally incorrect stereotypes that you mention. But you are making a straw man by pushing the blame on the trib and you are creating a false dichotomy by suggesting that the denigration of those groups - by the trib or anyone else - implies an acceptance of only 'yuppie' urban city dwellers. Cynically, I'd remind you that there are many other 'acceptable' groups besides Lincoln Park residents! Less cynically, I'd simply suggest that you're guilty of a non sequitur.

Actually, I'm glad that the puppets and the other sideshow stuff is off for the new season. I want my Springer with only the combatents and bodyguards on stage. The guy with no legs really didn't add that much to the show.

Actually, I'm glad that the puppets and the rest of the sideshow performers are not coming back this season. Just give me the combatents and security guards on the stage.

The headline ("No more hotbed of hillbillies") says it all. Could the Tribune get away with calling out any other cultural group that has been the subject of much derision and stereotyping over the years in this fashion? The answer is a resounding NO.

It's a show and he gets paid to do the job. Simple as that. He gets paid to MC the America's Got Talent, and he probably got paid to do DWTS...I'd say he has a fantastic manager and lawyer and accountant working to keep him employed. Good for him. He probably laughs at the end of the day and leaves his job at the studio.
