With shift of women to the workplace and more primetime soaps, the ratings for daytime dramas have all fallen. There are still millions of soap fans out there watching online and through dvr currently not counted in the Nielsen system (i watch on cbs.com , check out youtube hits also).

P&G wants to carry on the tradition of GL with a new home, rumored talks with several cable networks in the mix. I am an old fan who recently turned back in with the hyped returning characters and the swelling buzz for Olivia/Natalia and I hope to see the show jump to a new platform.

Sarah is dead on. There are still millions of soap fans out there who are watching and not being counted. There has been a shift in the way people, especially younger viewers, watch their favorite television shows.

I do hope that Guiding Light finds a new home because I think CBS made a critical mistake in canceling the show and underestimated the size and loyalty of GL's audience.

Thank you for this article. I still believe that Guiding Light has some life in it. It is better than ever and strangely represents the future of daytime, with its innovative production model and excellent writing and storylines.
We are all fighting to keep the show alive and hopefully it will find a new home.

Its sad it got cancelled especially when the rating system upon which the decision is made is so outdated. Not all viewers are stay-at-home moms. Many of us work days and then watch obsessively online and on DVR's..Another network would be wise to pick up GL for airing! There is a huge fan base ready and willing to follow it anywhere! And as ready and willing to support the sponsors as well!! GL's quality has been on the upswing lately and it needs to find a new home! Not everyone wants to watch gameshows!! And Otalia is the best written story in daytime or primetime! And next week should prove to be a significant one in their journey. I hope the producers haven't given up because we certainly haven't. Keep the Light Shining!!

Ok, with all the Lifetime talk it sounds like Hurst is really wrapping things up but is tossing hints that the show may continue. I am hurt.

I'm a relatively new GL viewer, but I've been watching soaps for over 45 years and I have to say the writing for this one is the best I've seen. The acting is stellar and the ratings system is outdated. I love the innovative production model because it really pulls you into the scene and makes it a much more intimate viewing experience. I also love the Otalia story, which is a classic, slow-building love story like the ones they used to tell. I hope P&G can find a new home for the show because I'm not ready for it to end.

Guiding Light is the best soap on air. It really deserves to find another home. BTW, the ratings system is in serious need of a revamp, it is in no way accurate!

Thank you Jill Lori Hurst for the wonderful writing!

What's particularly tragic about the cancellation of GL is that the show has gone back to its roots and within the last few months has been exemplifying "We were at our best when we were simple, romantic and family driven." This show is not like the other soaps, which I have not been able to be emotionally sucked into - this one has, and I'm hook, line, and sinker for it.

The Otalia story is probably one of the most romantic stories ever put to screen, and even if you have personal issues with it, at its core its about ture love, family and redemption and we need these kinds of stories. I'm over murder, subterfuge and backstabbing, I want GL and I want it to have a life after September.

Im still hoping and working to find Guiding Light a new home, but JLHs comments make me very happy. I really love the show right now. Less crazy stunts, more interaction between characters.
Thank you so much Jill and Ellen. We love you!

Guiding Light still lives and will continue to live on another network or another media platform. Why? Because P&G, along with many new and old viewers who are not counted by the current ratings system, want this quality show to continue.

Right now, Guiding Light crafts deeply nuanced stories of personal struggles. There is no crazy plot devices anymore. It is the best show on television. WE WANT IT TO SHINE ON!!

I am one of loyal viewers of this show and there have been some rough patches but I can honestly say the show is as great now as when I started watching 20 years ago. I will be heartbroken if this is the end. I hope another network picks this show up so I can follow it for another 20 years.

Lifelong viewer from Virginia. What a great article. I began watching after school in 1979 when Roger slipped from Ed's hand in Santo Domingo. My Mom and Grandmother watched, and although they're not here anymore, I still think about us watching "the stories" and talking about them, and how angry my Dad would be when he would get caught up in our discussions - and finally ask, "Who did THAT? WHO did WHAT? WHO WAS THIS?" and we would answer - Oh, it was on Guiding Light. OH, would he be mad! Then, when he retired, he became a loyal viewer and would schedule his doctor's appointments around the show. My Mom would say, "Oh, he gets very upset if he isn't home to watch Guiding Light. Now isn't that somethin' after all those years he would make fun of US!??" The show is a tie to my past, and regardless of its cancellation, I will never forget Guiding Light. It will always be the best.

Very nice article. I would love for the show to find a new home, but if that is not the case, I am glad to hear that the show will end with a wrap up of current storylines that will "honor the fans."

Viva La Guiding Light.

GL is not dead yet. CBS may have no ability to see the real audience out there but just look at the groundswell of support coming from new fans and the internet, and the amount of mainstream press the show is getting. GL has the most popular and press-worthy storyline on daytime (Otalia) and have really produced gold from the restrictive budget that CBS forced on them. When they find a more deserving home I will be moving with them.

I have watched GUIDING LIGHT since 1981 and GL has seen me through scholastic disasters, medical crises and employment snafus. I always watched GL on VCR or TiVo when I was working. I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the GL actors at various appearances over the years [and Vincent Irizarry (ex-Lujack/Nick) has even called me in the ICU when I was undergoing and recovering from neurosurgery]. I am very sad that GUIDING LIGHT will be cancelled in September 2009...I had always assumed that GL would outlive me. To have had the opportunity to meet some of my favorite actors in person just makes me so very happy. I would like to thank the GUIDING LIGHT cast for all that they have done for their fans and GL viewers over the years. The silent kindness they exude is a healing salve that I will miss forever.
