NBC still sucks and it won't get any better for them come the fall season. And their Boston affiliate, the hometown of Jay Leno, is actually refusing to air his new show. What does this say about the sorry state of NBC?

Rena,

Very simple...they have a charter agreement with DirecTV to air these shows or otherwise, NBC couldn not afford to air them on their network due to the high production costs. Yet, this show is tanking in the ratings and Vegas a year ago was trouncing them and yet they cancel Vegas and renew this pile of heep for two more years? This explains the sorry state of management at that network and that's why a major house-cleaning is needed up there starting with Zucker and Silverman. Also, their Boston affiliate is refusing to air jey's new show, so what does that say about the quality of programming there at the peacock, which is about to fly the coop, UNLESS changes are made there starting at top.

I didn't know that. I wish more affiliates rebelled like that. It might force NBC back onto the right path.

NBC affiliates must be seething. They used to be #1 and now they're #4 and soon to be eclipsed by cable channels.

I agree entirely. Regardless of cost, I don't see how they can afford to keep on the air a show with such bad ratings (especially that its ratings have gone down every year).

Brian Lowry, I think got it right a while back when he pointed out that Mr. Zucker's management style is always to favor the short term over the long term.

Unfortunately, not planning for the long term gets you in last place. You'd think someone at GE would have caught on to that and made the appropriate correction (be they to fire Mr. Zucker or to give him instructions to start acting in a more strategic fashion). Either direction would probably result in vast improvements.

In particular, the Zucker style of management seems to put profitability over all else (hence Friday Night Lights coming back because it's cheap and canceling the 10pm hour because Jay is cheaper), but he should be reminded that 10% of a billion is more than 50% of a million.

Profitability is important only when understood in context of overall profits.

Friday night lights is amazing one of the best shows on tv..this agreement with direct tv give a really good show a chance to stay on tv...just cause the rating are bad doesnt mean the show isnt great...some of the best shows on tv were cancelled

Well, personally I think it's an insult to the art of film-making. Shaking the camera and playing with the zoom constantly is just the most awful thing I have ever seen on a screen from a directing perspective.

Something that NBC doesn't seem to realize is that while they feel great about having FNL on because the press repeats blindly how well-liked it is, with real viewers, Friday Night Lights enhances NBC's reputation as the Nothing But Crap network and makes it more difficult for them to launch quality shows.

I find it hard to believe that younger viewers watch "Wifeswap" over "Friday Night Lights" if you do please respond.

Why would CBS want to keep a low-rated show on the air when they can replace it with something that'll do better?

Seriously, only NBC (and CW) seem to think that keeping low-rated shows is good strategy. Of course it's a good strategy if you want to fail in the long run, which both of those networks are currently doing.

Daily Horoscope for January 8

Scorpio

Self-worship is easy and obvious, today. The real prize is when you turn from the mirror to see that others think just as highly of you. Take in all this love and amazement, and store some away for lean times in the future. Someone may give you an unexpected compliment later in the day, but don't let them know that it caught you off guard. After all, you still have your reputation as an egomaniac to uphold!
