I felt that the judges were pushing David Cook all season. They praised his performances as "wonderful, terrific, innovative, etc." but many just sounded like yelling to me. Some were very good, too, but many left me cold. I think that David Cook would be a great lead singer for a rock band. A few times, he didn't try to rock it out, and you could tell that he had a great voice, but much of the time it was lost.

I expect that David Cook will win, just like I expected Fantasia to win. They both were pushed by the judges all season.

It's all part of the AI MAchine...If he does well it still is a product of AI and there gives more credibility to AI. <quoted text>
Yes, that's true. But I was responding to the previous poster who said that AI would rather David Archuleta win because David Cook is going to sell CDs and make AI money either way, whereas David Archuleta will fade quickly and AI needs him to win so that they can make money off him before he does fade.

I believe, based on what I have read, that only the winner is locked into signing the AI contract, which means if AI believes that Cook will sell more CD's than Archuleta, they would be MUCH better off if Cook wins or else he might sign with someone else.

Even if both the winner and runner-up are locked into the AI contract, it does them no good from a credibility standpoint if the winner fades into obscurity and the runner-up becomes the superstar.

Obviously, it is best for AI if the contestant who can be the most successful after the show wins, both from a financial standpoint and a credibility standpoint. In other words, there is no reason for the AI judges to pimp Archuleta to win if they did not really believe he deserved it (as the other poster implied they were doing).

At this point, I think either one can win and that both have a good shot at being successful after the show. I'm just reacting to the post that AI wants Archuleta to win because they think he will be least successful and that somehow that is better for the show. Obvioulsy, that makes no sense!

What happened to the judges looking for variety in music styles? I wouldn't buy a CD that was all ballads.

Obviously there is a conflict between a desire for commercial success and who is the most popular David. In spite of thoughts to the contrary, I personally doubt that either David will fade into obscurity. Anyone who claims otherwise must have some psychic gift the rest of lack.

Both Davids have exceptional talent and capture specific audiences with their very different styles. When they find their niche they will stay there till the popularity of the music genre fades or till they move on to something else (e.g. David Archuletta said the he might like to be an ENT physician).

Nevertheless, we have been extremely priveledged to get two extraordinarily gifted talents on American Idol this year. In the past the talent differences of the contestants seemed to be clear, but this time it was very foggy. Who cares who won? I only care that I was able to hear both throughout the season.

how many times did you guys vote last night? i did 45 but i fell asleep voting!!!
I phoned in 55 votes, some for each of the kids, and on three different phone numbers. What surprised me was that I was able to do this in a ten minute period (11:17-11:27 EST) and hit absolutely no busy signals. I cannot recall that ever happening before on an AI finale. In fact, the previous week was the only time this season that I encountered any busy signals, making me suspicious of the announced voting totals every week.

I suppose it could mean that more votes are being texted in, but doesn't that get hellaciously expensive for most people? It could also mean that they've contracted for more phone lines, but knowing how notoriously cheap 19 Entertainment is, I rather doubt that.

I gotta tell ya that Clay Akins version is WAY WAY WAY cheezy, if that stirs something in you then you've got a fatal case of Manilowitis! Archuletta's voice is the most pure and moving I've heard since the flawless vocals of Karen Carpenter - the kind of vocal quality that only comes around every few decades. I'll take Archie's "shaken" over Cook's "stir" any day!
This is heresy. I'm generally a supporter of your Constitutional right to your opinion, but there are limits.

I just cannot fathom that someone who can appreciate the poignancy of the late Karen Carpenter's work could find David Archuleta's mechanical singing "moving." I'll go along with "pure" - technically, his vocals are pretty good - but I maintain that his ability to convey emotion is extremely weak.

And Barry Manilow is a hugely underrated singer. His voice doesn't possess the innate beauty of some, but his intrepretitive choices are beyond reproach. Although they are quite different, I had to acknowledge back in the '70s that Barry's "Can't Smile Without You" was just as valid and skillful as Karen's - something that I wouldn't have expected until I heard the proof.
