No surprise there. She's an unknown. We've been listening to Obama speak on the campaign trail for almost two years. There wasn't much substance in the speech - but that's also to be expected. After all, she's new on the trail and probably doesn't know what McCain's going to say. I doubt he knows.

The bigger question is whether those 40 million liked what they heard. Based on the $8 million Obama raised in the period directly after her speech ended (less than 24 hours ago), I'd say no.

Of course, McCain hasn't released any donation totals for a comparable period.

You just can't use an abacus that quickly. I'm sure it'll be out in a few days.

that's not "more than...". The most you could get away with is saying "40 million watch Palin", but that is only due to mildly acceptable rounding.

I think it's kind of like the population of Wasilla (5429 - US Census 2000) that blossomed to 7,000-9,000 in recent news reports and then finally 10,000 according to the Hawaii Gov. when she spoke at the RNC.

Either way, to put it in perspective it's safe to say that the population of Wasilla is about 10% of the capacity of Denver's Invesco Field.

Too bad the TV ratings can't tell us the political affiliation of viewers; I don't know a single Republican who bothered watching the DNC, most Democrats I know watched both. I think a good portion of Palin's viewers were Democrats looking for some shred of rationale for how she got the pick; in the end, we got it. She has obviously been well-trained as a mouthpiece of the fringe right.
