Hello all, I hope everyone has had a good summer.
I had a thought, its a change of subject, but I am interested in how people on each side think about it.
Do you all remember the WACO massacre? Its always bothered me personally.
One man was charged with a terrible crime. Then the whole group which belonged to his religion was demonized by our press. Then the tanks rolled in, caused a horrible fire, and many men, women, and children were massacred by a branch of our own government.
Now, of course, if the man, David Koresh, committed the atrocious crimes, he should have been tried, convicted, and sentenced for his crime. And as long as the wheels of justice take to turn anyway; I saw no reason why they couldn't just wait them out to arrest him.
After all, if a defendent can wait so long to be tried; why can't the gov wait them out to arrest them?
Anyway, can you see how each side of political or religious groups can forget that each other are ALL American citizens when one group is demonized by the press? And then, because such a group seem so odd to us, we can forget they have Constitutional Rights which we all should stand up for.
My point is, as much as each side in that situation or each side of groups in abortion debates or gay issues can rile each other up in having debate with each other; don't we all think we should give it a real good think? And as much as we should be able to have these conversations, no matter how nasty they can become; shouldn't we all remember this is the priviledge of being an American citizen.(in other countries the people who decent on issues are likely mistreated, you know)
I think we should remember to treasure the fact that we can be free to debate on topix, calling each other *ssholes even, and we don't have to worry about being mistreated for our decenting views.
And as much as we may wish with all our hearts to convince each other to our pov's; we may need to make sure we stand up for each other as fellow Americans if we see either/any side becoming mistreated for their pov's.
What are your thoughts on this?
