Took a Rebel Stand wrote: You have to remember that this generation was just one generation removed from old Virginia where a lot of them come in here from. Their extended family was in Virginia and so was their loyalty as Virgina was more thier country to them than the Federal Governement, states rights was a big issue then. A lot of people did not trust a Federal government controlling every aspect of their lives, still don't. As we were a border state and in between the North and the south it was particularly ugly in this region. We had people here that come in from the Ohio region and other parts north as well and there their sentiment layed with the North. Confederate raiders coming in an even forced subscription and the North doing the same thing.. I had a member of my family come back from the fight before the war was over. He fought for the south but was not soldier material for either side. He was a logger and run timber down to Cattlesburg and was know to be a rough character on the riverboats ride back, always fighting and a real terror when he was drunk. He hit an officer in the confederate army and in those days that was a firing squad offense. He ended up running back home and spent the rest of the war hiding out with both the Confederates and the Union looking for him. He was known to be a good fighter and brave enough in battle but undisciplined and did not take orders well. chicken blood

Devil Anse should have shot that Ignorant bible thumping Mccoy and put an end to all the fighting much earlier. Mccoy is portrayed as a hypocrite throughout the movie. Always hollering they were threatening murder while one of his relatives actually committed murder. I enjoyed the scene where Anse's brother whipped the crap out of three Mccoys at the same time. The cowards pulled a whitaker, one held him while one of the others got a gun. All three Mccoy sons needed to be put down for what they did. It might just be me, but I despise people who act better then others, especially when the truth is they are even worse.

The Reason wrote: The reason they didn't use the actual region where the feud took place was Mountain Top Removal and Strip mining. The area is just a shell of it's former self because of the coal corporations. At least the film did not refer to us as "a bunch of Hillbilly's" as the poster of this thread did in the title. You can't find anyone with enough sense in this area to do an accurate piece from that period. People here are to ignorant now and allow themselves to be called hillbilly's and I would not trust this bunch around a period correct film such as this either. It is a good thing they took it away from here so the politicians did not make a pro coal film out of it and have themselves as the leading characters... You're an idiot. Go to goggle maps and use the sat feature on Eastern Ky. You will be hard pressed to find a strip job among all the green mountain tops.

I like the show. I wished they would have filmed it here in the region to boost the local economy. Some things are not accurate. The majority of the Hatfields living in Mingo County (West Virginia) fought for the Confederacy. The majority of the McCoys living in Pike County, Kentucky fought for the Union Army. Randolph McCoy and Devil Anse Hatfield never served together in the civil war. Devil Anse Hatfield was not a deserter. Frank Phillip's gang of deputies never arrested anyone for the three McCoy boy killings by the Hatfields. The kidnapping of Johnse Hatfield by Roseanna McCoy's brothers never happened as seen on the show. "Johnse Hatfield was arrested by the McCoys on outstanding Kentucky bootlegging warrants. He was freed from McCoy custody only when Roseanna made a desperate midnight ride to alert Devil Anse Hatfield, who organized a rescue party. The Hatfield party surrounded the McCoys and took Johnse back to West Virginia before he could be transported to the county seat, Pikeville, Kentucky, for justice the next day."

It's odd how "Devil" Anse Hatfield is stuck w/ that nickname, yet James "Honest Dick" Tate, who robbed the taxpayers blind, is given his nickname.
I thought it pretty accurate... I think the part about them serving in the Civil War together to show that they were friends at one point. I read that Devil Anse Hatfield deserted... it would make sense. Why fight for whoever, when you could be in your house ?
"The fact is that the majority of both Hatfields and McCoys fought for the South, though members of both clans, including Devil Anse, leader of the West Virginia clan, deserted and came home well before the war ended." (page 59, Days of Darkness, Pearce).
Altina Waller said that the feud started b/c Randal McCoy was a total loser, and resented the successful Anderson (Devil Anse) for his ability to start successful businesses.
"Upon his return home, Devil Anse formed a unit of Home Guards known as the Logan Wildcats, in whose ranks were several McCoys, including for a while clan leader Randal McCoy.

Well there was some creative embellishing in the film for sure. Some of the historical facts they got wrong in the film will cause more arguments and add to the confusion that is already there. None of which takes away from the entertainment value of the film but in places the film is just not historically correct. One place they missed is but a small inaccuracy and does not take much away from the film. I would have been hard for them to get it all right but in the case of Roseanna McCoy she was not blonde, a fact that is hard to determine from old photo's but from historical accounts and the picture's we have of her she had dark black hair. She would have been a beautiful woman in any age or time so it may have been hard to find a B actor that was close in resemblance. Probably just another effort to keep the cost down on the production.

I don't believe everyone went around packing all the time. I know the Hatfield clan had to go get their guns for the famous group picture. You did not walk around Pikeville in the late 1800's or early 1900's wearing your pistols and carrying rifles/shotguns. Makes for a more shoot em up action packed film but I have seen many photo's from the period and nobody was packing heat. I don't doubt they packed them out in the hills when threatened and around the farms but working while carrying all that iron would be an akward proposition!

That is hsrdly the point, a lot more pack today than then probably. Pocket guns hidden and out of site, under the front car seat. Some got the Concealed to Carry Permists some don't, still nobody wore side arms in Pikeville and other cities like you see in the old western movies..They may have had pocket guns or holsters under their jacket but few of them...Good for the movie but not realistic and it just was not done...

I do have the permit, got it when they first become available packed for 20 years before they come out with the CCW so that is still a moot point...talk about shootin off at the mouth, most people don't even acknowledge the CCW and guns are not like the old ATT, no one has the monopoly on one. Still not germane to the point, no body back then packed them hoglegs down Pikeville. I am glad you got your chance to tell you are a cowboy but not relevant to the original post....
