Why Do We Call Obama Black?

It's not a new question. I've heard it a few times as support for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination has grown.

I find that when a person is biracial and the one part is black they are automaticly labeled as black when this is a misrepresentation of the other parents and foreparents who sired that person. I think that Obama chose to accept this label because he is unsure of his own self and he needed the black vote to possibly win the election. This is just another reason I do not think that Obama is right for our country when he does not choose to stand with the whites of his heritage fully at all times but only when it is convenient and blacks only when that is convenient. He is confused and that is reflected in his books and I hope that the American people will vote against him because he is a user and not true to himself.

Tiger Woods spotlights multiracial identity

Excerpt:
In the early and mid-1990s, most mainstream newspapers and magazines described Woods as a talented young "black" or "African-American" amateur golfer. Black magazines such as Ebony and Jet profiled the young golfer.

But Woods soon began correcting reporters, telling them he would be denying his mother by allowing the media to describe him only as black.

In June 1995, shortly before playing in his first U.S. Open, Woods went a step further and issued a news release about his racial background.

"The various media have portrayed me as an African-American, sometimes Asian," he said in the short statement. "In fact, I am both.... Truthfully, I feel very fortunate and equally proud to be both African-American and Asian."

I remember when Tiger made this statement and I was so impressed and proud of him. So what's up with Obama?

If he (Obama) has made any effort to correct his public racial identity, then I missed it. He easily and readily accepts the Black label IMO.

I agree with Annette. I believe that Obama saw opportunity in that it would work to his advantage at this time in history.

I don't like him at all and it has nothing to do with his race.

Well we call him black because he is black....have you looked at him? Yeah, pretty obvious isn't it! Technically he is "half" white but why is it that he looks NOTHING like his Mom? When whites and blacks interbreed the offspring always looks black. Period. And with whom do they identify? Obviously with the group they resemble. His Mom probably never thought of that one before marrying a black guy. OOPS! "Gee, why is it that none of my physical traits show up in my son?" Hmmm....gee I wonder! LOL. This is not rocket science, people. Obama is BLACK....end of discussion as far as I can tell.

Did none of you folks read the article? As he told Steve Croft, HE didn't necessarily identify himself as black, American society did.

And for Crockett, who thinks he looks nothing like his mom, do a little googling for pictures and you'll find that, in fact, he looks very much like his grandfather, his mother's father, except for the color of his skin of course.

No, actually I didn't read the article. I generally do but my computer is on the fritz. I missed the video link above as well. Had a feeling that might bite me in the butt.

lake lady,

Let me help you out here:

bigot-One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

There is nothing in my posts that is bigoted. Perhaps you are a tad judgmental?

judgmental-inclined to make judgments, especially moral or personal ones

Hope you get some help for that. Oh, and have a lovely weekend!

Sorry, but you're wrong. I know a child, his mother is black and his father is white and this little kid has BLOND HAIR AND BLUE EYES. So not all children born to mixed relationships are mostly black.

Quote of the Year From The Audacity Of Hope… I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction. Senator Barack Hussein Obama
Quote of the Month:“My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you’ll join with me as we try to change it.”- Senator Barack Hussein Obama

Reason Obama said he wanted to be President of ALL 57 states. Keep in mind U.S. doesn’t have 57, but…ISLAM is what he is talking about!
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is an international organization grouping 57 states which have decided to pool their resources together, combine their efforts, and speak with one voice to safeguard the interests and secure the progress and well-being of their peoples and of all Muslims in the world.

President Obama A Victory For Islam

If Barack Obama Enters The White House, Islam Will Have Conquered The Heart Of American Civilization.

Said; IsraCast, Menashe Amir an Israeli expert on Iran

How does Iran view the possibility that Barack Hussein Obama, a former Muslim, might win the U.S. presidential election? Menashe Amir, an Israeli expert on Iran, says not only Iran but also the rest of the Muslim world, will view it as victory for Islam. In an interview with IsraCast, Menashe Amir quoted an important Iranian personality who declared: "If Obama enters the White House, Islam will have conquered the heart of American society!" However, President Ahmadinejad has said that he did not believe the U.S establishment would let Obama win. If Barack Hussein Obama wins the U.S. presidential election, Muslims will view it as a victory and forget that he converted from Islam to Christianity" - that's the view of Israeli analyst Menashe Amir. In fact one leading Iranian personality recently said: "If Obama enters the White House, Islam will have conquered the heart of American society.

This is true. Tiger Woods' mom is Thai. I notice that you refer to him as Asian, which is true. But did you know he was Thai? And if not, that would serve to prove your point. Everyone knows his dad's a black American, hardly anyone knows (or remembers) his mom is Thai.

the 57 states is clearly him mispeaking, since he mentioned not being able to visit a couple of specific US states. As for what the rest of the world perceives, its not just the Muslim world thats unhappy with the rule of Bush. Survey's conducted globally before the last presidential election had precisely 2 countriews where a majority of citizens prefered bush over what ever luke warm democrat running (israel and india). AS for Islam conquering the heart of american civilization, there is still a congress and system of courts that would also have to be "conquered" if obama was somehow going to turn The US into and Islamic state. Your foolishness on this issue is endemic to the U ASS A (also known as the nation of Bush). Meanwhile the half of america that can see past its nose will be voting for someone with a law degree and the ability to think on his feet.

THe reason Obama is viewed as black is due to the legacy of slavery in the US. In the slave era, one drop of black blood was viewed as a reason to continue to deny cival rights to a person. If you ever see sally hemmings, thomas jefferson's slave of choice, she looks about as dark as Jason Kidd. Obama is obviously not the spitting image of his father, based on pictures i've seen.

I beleive that Tiger Woods saw opportuniity in that it would work to his advantage to be Asian. After all did he marry a Black woman? Is golf a particularly Black sport? No, the man lives in a white world. It would not serve him to be Black. But then again, with Obama running for President, it doesnt serve him being Black either, now does it?

Oh, what white america wont do to continue keeping others down. How in the world will Obama winning the Presidency be a victory for any Muslim nation? Stop using stupidity as a cover for your racism. If you white people had any sense at all, you might think that God has considered blessing america again by raising up Obama, a man experienced with the very people who are giving us so much trouble these days. But of course you cant get past your racism and looking for excuses for your racism. Keep it up and you may find "your chickens comming home to roost" for real.

Truth is, almost all African-Americans are biracial. For that matter, in genetic terms, most Europeans are biracial as well.

Race is a social invention, not a biological characteristic. It is subjective, not objective. If Obama "looks black" to most black and white people, if he identifies himself as black, and if he participates in the black community, how an he possibly be considered not black?

I think the title of the article gets at a deeper question: WHY do people feel the need to use a label? I rarely hear McCain or Clinton being labeled with their racial background, yet so many people seem to need to label those who are different from them in some visible way. I think it's more a reflection of people's perceptions than what Obama's heritage is.

It's the same as how usually if UConn men are playing a game, it's reported as "The Huskies" but if the women play they are referred to as "The LADY Huskies." Default settings: male, white, etc. Outside of that, it somehow needs to be labeled and seen as newsworthy. Such a limited way of thinking, IMO.
