Oh good grief. Maybe they need to meet the group in Kansas and they can all protest together.

There are so many more issues much more pressing than a mascot name. The name is is represented as an honor, a warrior. Good grief.

How is redskins a racist mascot. The white trash or the n-word would be racist redskins is not. When are you guys going to give up this fight already. 3 protesters is more of a get together than a protest. Bet the town said damn 3 people are out there let that guy out. I wonder how he was protecting his community?

Where were these protesters back when I was at Union in the late 1980's and they couldn't play football worth darn? Oh wait...not enough TV exposure. Same thing happened with the Atlanta Braves when they were winning championships in baseball too.

Actually, the term "Oklahoma" comes from two Choctaw terms meaning "Red" and "Man". Notice of course, that the NSU team in Tahlequah is known as the "Redmen."
"Redskin" is a derogatory term for Native Americans. It was historically used in the same manner at the words "Negro", "N-----r", or "Wetback". Can't think of any other well known derogatory terms for Natives, other than perhaps "injun." Naturally, there are many other terms which "Redskin" resembles, but these are the most used today. "Redskin" is literally a derogatory term.
America has a long history of using derogatory terms, it shouldn't be a surprise that there were a few derogatory terms for natives.

what is bad about protesting ? i think it's a good thing people can express their opinion.it releases a lot of stress. it's better than having fanatics going violent. this is what they think and they want to say it loud. you can choose to listen or not.

This is ridiculous. Too many idiots with nothing to worry about. What does Pelteir have anything to do with the Union Redskin Mascot? It's a damn high school mascot. Who cares! As far as Pelteir is concerned, Gee I guess we just need to throw out the whole Judicial system, right? I mean evidence in a court of law has no meaning at all, right? Stupid idiot! Makes me think of the movie Liar, Liar, when the guy calls and say's he just knocked off an ATM and wants legal advice......stop breaking the law *&^%@*^!

Pelteir's story is a strange one. Watched a documentary on it the other night (couldn't sleep, whatever). FBI agents came on to Indian land and just randomly started shooting at the indians is Pelteir's story from what I recall, so the indians killed the agents. Really ridiculous. What in the world does that have to do with these kids playing football? Redskin is no longer considered derogatory in our society. We're in Oklahoma, we're all a little indian these days. I'm from Tahlequah, I'm not ashamed to be considered a redskin. You D#amn right I am a redskin. Get over it.
I can't believe I just wasted my time even posting to this subjet.

What does Leonard Peltier have anything to do with the Jenks vs. Union game?..or even mascots?..Good grief..These protestors need to get re-focused and do something positive for their local community..Plant a tree, smell a flower..do something other than complain about the name of a football team..I am a proud member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and you don't see me walking around grumbling about a name..
