NASA lander in OK shape, photo caught Mars landing

I'm not a scientist, but the article says "Winter will set in later this year at its landing site and likely will cover the lander with frost"
Don't you need moisture in order to get frost? And if there is moisture, there is water....right? |
Might be frost other than water; carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen or other gases will "frost" if it's cold enough.

That is a lot of money that could have been used to improve gas efficiency.
Repay IOU's to social security, offset the cost of the housing crisis, pay for more body armor in Iraq. I am glad we are this smart, to land something on a distant planet - but what good is it when we are destroying this one? |
I agree. NASA is a waste of time and money. There are more important problems on earth to throw money at, if our Govt. was so inclined. Close down NASA now! Over $17 billion was tossed out into space in 2007! To what end? |
Yeah, and Queen Isabella should have shut down Columbus too; I'm sure there were better uses for the money in Spain at the time.
Your point? |
To what end??? How do the following items appeal to you: 1) Tangible benefits such as new materials, new manufacturing techniques, new medicines, etc. 2) Unquestioned benefit of employment for tens of thousands of Americans in a worthy endeavor. 3) Expanding the knowledge of humanity, and our understanding of the universe. 4) Improving our ability to detect and deflect or destroy incoming space objects that could potentially cause great damage and catastrophic loss of life, or even destroy the entire planet. 5) Improve technology towards the day when we are able to leave earth and colonize other planets, so when someone inevitably does something stupid and destroys the earth, the human race has a chance to survive. This was an easy list of five items, there are several more I could mention if I had more time. In a government that throws money around on countless worthless projects, NASA is an example of something amazing that the government has been able to accomplish, with a miniscule budget (when compared with the rest of the government programs). |

I won! While I read the article I bet that there'd be a M-O-R-O-N that would post this! OK, I lied. His name is M-O-R! Throw me a techno cookie! READ and COMPREHEND! http://www.google.com/search... |

LOL! This poster is clueless! |
Well for one.. we'd be able to send you back home. I figure this guy's a Martian. Just trying to keep Martian oil all to himself! |

yeah...why waste money on space when we can dump money into countries we invaded who are only going to turn on us anyway? Carl Sagan was right....we eventually need to get off this rock to survive. He might have added we need to evolve or grow more in God's image (take your pick, its a man-made argument) before we leave here so we don't take our bad manners into space with us.
We spend that much in 60 days in Iraq. "Tossed out into space", eh? Any clue what the first "A" stands for? Yeah, we wouldn't want any of that spinoff from NASA like kidney dialysis methods, remote sensing, aircraft noise abatement, insulation technology for your car, engine firewalls, CAT scans, modern databases, cordless tools, physical therapy equipment, zeolites, non-invasive ultrasound heart monitors, air filters, pill cameras, CMOS cameras, water purification, oil spill cleanup, solar electric panels, police spike strips, lightning tracking, handsfree headsets, running shoes, LASIK instruments, cockpit weather systems, aircraft de-icing, eye tracking for quadriplegics, fresh produce... the limit here is 3000 characters and I'm just getting warmed up here... Nah. |

IF humans are to survive we must move into many other locations outside of earth. If we only focus on day to day activities on earth, then we are keeping out eggs in one basket.

Excellent list, and many more items could be added. Idiots who say we are wasting money on the space program when there are "things we could be spending it on here on Earth" will never cease to amaze me. They lack both the realization of the current benefits of the space program you listed, as well as the ability to work and aspire towards the promise of tomorrow. The exploits of 20-40 years from now are built upon the efforts and discoveries of today. |

Our great, great grand kids are going to live on that planet.
It doesn't mean anything for us, but, let the future happen. It all starts with the "little" things like this. Scary, but true. |
