Nature & Nurture: Warm & Very Gay-Friendly Iceland

When most Americans think of Iceland - that is, when they think of it at all - they probably conjure up visions of an ice-covered, barren, isolated, primitive place.

Excellent article.

I spent 2 years in Iceland (courtesy of the US military), and I loved every mintue of it. It's one of the most scenic countries I've ever lived in. When I left Chicago in January it was -30 degrees; when I arrived in Keflavik it was +30 degrees. It was also dark for nearly 24 hrs a day, but then in summer it's light for nearly 24 hrs a day. That did take some getting used to!

The northern lights are the most spectacular anywhere on the planet- great ribbons of green/yellow/red rolling across the night sky.

One caveat- while Icelanders are indeed very friendly to tourists (gay & straight alike), remember you will always be just a tourist. As the article notes, they are the most racially pure country on the planet, and they intend to stay that way. With rare exceptions, Icelanders only marry other Icelanders. Marrying outsiders- whether white, black, asian, etc- is frowned upon. That's probably partly due to some of my fellow servicemembers who went there looking for blond haired blue eyed brides.

But by all means, go spend a week or two in Iceland- it's truly one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

I spent two weeks there and the only problem I had was trying to keep up with the alcohol consumption of the locals. I finally gave up. Restaurants served the most delicious food.

I can confirm. Tolerant and open-minded... I love Icelanders!
