It's not just home heating oil and gasoline, but also all the products that are derived from oil. Notice the increased price of plastic and styrofoam lately? That plays huge part in price of packaging for food on shelves. Disposable medical supplies are mostly made of plastic, which increases insurance and medical costs. How many office supplies are plastic-based or packaged in plastic?
Think about everything you use each day that is made of an oil by-product. They really have us over a barrel!
Its about the OVERPACKAGING too!
Just opened a bottle of vitamins, last night, and the contents were half the volume of the container!!!
Good pun BTW!

Good people I was a automatic transmission mechanic for fity-one years and I learned years ago that you fix what caused the transmission to go bad before you fix what is broken in the transmission. Does that give you any ideas about the bushes? I would certainly would hope so. FIX THE CAUSE NOW!

There is a large number of us who have no access to public transportation. Because we live in a rural area, there are no other choices than to ride in a personal automobile. A bike doesn't cut it when you need to go 12 miles to the grocery store (and bring home groceries for four). I have simply drastically reduced my number of trips "to town."
I hear you!
We who live rurally, can at least produce more of our own food, and find close local sources for more.
We do.
We live on a decent sized wood lot, grow a lot of our own food, have local farmers who can sell to us for a lot more than to a big supermarket chain, and still supply us at prices lower than we would pay in the stores.
Bonus, the food is safer and healthier.
City people have different options, like public transportation, walking, biking, and almost every city has farmers markets.

Hey, but out of fairness, they don't have a pompus, greedy, materialistic government and "big business" out on a misson to die with the "biggest pile".

We DO have to support their "habit" ya know.

It's funny how the repug's dont put any blame on Bush or Cheneys secret energy policy crafted by oilmen. I remember when Clinton was president he was actively engaged in the energy situation, he would release oil from the stategic oil reserve when prices would start climbing, and the result was lower prices as a result of more oil in the markets. I fault Bush and his corrupt administration for the situation we are in now. I hope the dem's start some agressive investagations once Bush is out of office. And make sure they dont destroy any evidence before they leave office.
You are exactly correct---this administration has abandoned middle america---

I doubt that, or our PM would be piddling in his trews:)
Wish it were though, as it is the dirtiest most polluting method of extraction.
The technology to do it in a much cleaner way exists, but so far, we have chosen not to do so.
If your news IS true, it could force the do nothings to clean up our act......and our shale reserves are such, that we could buy a lot of time for alternate energy sources to become viable!
Meanwhile we have to get over our love affair with cars...yep, me too.

I'm with Kimberly on that one. I live in a town where the bus stop is 25miles away. My nearest grocery store is 7 and thank God I live within working distance. It is a shame that gas has risen to this high. If the gas rises to $10/gallon I think we all would be screwed because im my neck of the woods public transportation isn't an option

Bring it on,$10,$15, the sky is the limit!!! I have made a fortune since the prices have expanded, good investments have paid off, no problems filling the tank of our old Humvee diesel, F-350,(yes with duelies) and an old '51 Mercury with a Hemi power plant. But I do still pedal 30-50 miles a week on my old Peugeot U0-8 touring bicycle to make my neighbors grin. Excuse me while I go hug a gas pump...

What if gas cost $10 a gallon?

I anticipated the cost increase in gasoline 5 years ago. My only surprise was it took so long to start when you consider the evolving world economies of countries like China and India. The weak dollar has exasperated the problem as every barrel worldwide is traded in that currency.

I eliminated the 50 mile commute by retiring, then moved 1 mile from the wife’s job 5 years ago when you could still sell a house. I take her to work in a golf cart and stop by the number one tee on the way back, Life is pure hell. I fill up the monstrosity once a month – maybe!!!

The other house located in Bogota, Colombia, where they build up rather than out, requires no car at all. You can walk (within a 5 block radius} to 3 shopping centers, about a hundred restaurants, 2 supermarkets as large as any in the USA , a hospital and about anything else you may need. A new public transportation system, far ahead of its time will take you by rail anywhere in that modern city that is 500 yrs old for about 2 dollars. All cars, trucks and buses use E-85 Ethanol and the air of 20 years ago is no longer filled with fumes.

I am sharing this with you all because we as a country may have to make a few changes on how we get around. Initially the behemoths that we drive will shrink in size. 10 hour work days and 4 day work week will possibly be next in corporate America. In addition car pools will have to return and people will no longer drive 10 miles for a loaf a bread, they will plan their trips more efficiently. Traffic will lesson on the roads that are already maxed out. Additionally, as prices continue to increase our work days will lengthen as more people choose buses and trains in a tight, I sitting next to a moron that forgot to shower commute.

Welcome to EUROPE.

More, I don't speak metric very well, but our gallons are different.

I drive a SuV because I have 3 kids in carseats and they cant fit in the back seat of a Ford Focus or other economy car. I have something for everyone to think about. While we are all complaining about gas, what about that bottled water you are drinking from? Per my caluculations, on the average, it costs you $12 per gallon of bottled water. How I got this figure: The avg. price of a 16fl oz bottle of water is $1.50. A gallon is 128fl oz. That is $12 per gallon. Yes, gas is terribly high. But bottled water is much higher. I love Dasani and Aquafina but no longer drink from bottled water just for that reason and because the plastic used in bottles will be in the landfills long after we are gone.
