Die Weltwoche, a Zurich-based news weekly, has triggered outrage among some people in Switzerland, Germany and Austria with its latest cover and lead article.
I have studied what was known as Gypsies for my novel and the boy does not look like a European Sinti or Roma to me. He looks more Pakistani to me, that's the part of the old Indian colony where they came from. The facial features, skin colour and hair are too 'Indian' for a Roma. In Europe I encountered European Roma and Sinti.
What is visible from the shirt does not look Roma either. Roma do not generally go to the trouble of putting elastic in sleeves.
With about 80 % certainty I would say that boy is no European 'Gypsy', but of Pakistani origin.
