... cause of death.

Currently, at least 12 people infected with Listeria traced back to a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Ontario have died,

although the bacteria is believed to have only caused --

or been a strong factor in -- six of those deaths.

Special Meetings to Protect Our Health System
Health restructuring is here. If we don't force the McGuinty government to listen, we are on the cusp of decade-long for-profit privatization in homecare and severe hospital cuts - including hospital program closures, the loss of small and rural hospitals and privatization.

Since winning the last election, the McGuinty government has become deaf to democratic public input and has again broken serious election promises to protect and uphold non-profit health care and to institute minimum care standards in long-term care homes.

The current restructuring path is deeply damaging. Cut from the Mike Harris model it features hospital cuts and out-of-pocket charges to patients, competitive bidding and privatization in homecare, deregulation and privatization of nursing homes.

Sound health planning has been abandoned as government-appointed LHINs require cuts without concern for consequences and patients are forced out of hospitals without proper care. Health planning in homecare and long term care is now almost entirely driven by vested private interests counter to the public interest.

Despite claiming tight finances, the government is wasting millions on privatized P3 hospitals - making multinational financiers, lawyers, consultants and private health companies rich - while leading to bed cuts and service constraints. While patients are told we have to tighten our belts, the government refuses to require proper accountability for the well-connected companies who are siphoning profits from publicly-funded long term care facilities and P3 hospitals.

Enough is enough!
