The middle class Left love a dictator. Pity some of us have got such inconvenient memories. The Dili massacre threatened to expose the Labor leaders' support for the Suharto regime, so they covered it up.
ALP leaders had some pretty compelling reasons to grovel and roll over to an Asian dictator, whitewash the Dili massacre, and condone/ignore the many other crimes carried out by the Suharto regime.
'National interests' and 'political interests'= profits of Australian big business.
Of course, vigorous denials were issued by Gareth Evans, and threats of libel action by Paul Keating (who cosied up to Sukarno and tried to make secret treaties).
Another compelling reason to dislike Paul Keating.
