Andrew Bolt: Sorry for a crime that never happened
IT'S over, and all I can do now is offer a sincere sorry of my own. You see, no matter what, a sorry to the "stolen generations" will be read out in Parliament next week by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. via News.com.au

thank you andrew bolt for some common sense...this prime minister is unbelievable...least i dont have to squirm every time he opens his mouth...i didnt vote for him...now hes running off to timor to play saviour...wish hed do something about lowering interests rates, petrol and food prices as he promised pre election...the guy is a joke

***now hes running off to timor to play saviour****
So were you ok when little Johnny sent Australian troops to Timor |
You mean when the UN gave the go ahead, if its fine to bang Howard every second of the day then its fine to bang Rudd to |
Why dont you stick to the thread before the both of you start this as a Rudd bashing exercise. Saying sorry to Indeigenous Australians was so hard for the starchy collared blue bloods in the liberal party. It was never about compensation, it always a race issue. |

I seem to remember the middle class left urging Howard to send the troops to Timor to save the locals from the brutal Indonesian genocide squads.
I seem to recall the middle class left cosying up to Suharto during the Whitlam era. I also recall Australia's Libs bending over backwards not to implicate the Indonesian Korpusus in the Dili massacre. Looks like everyone is a bit dirty. |
'I seem to recall the middle class left cosying up to Suharto during the Whitlam era' The middle class Left love a dictator. Pity some of us have got such inconvenient memories. The Dili massacre threatened to expose the Labor leaders' support for the Suharto regime, so they covered it up. ALP leaders had some pretty compelling reasons to grovel and roll over to an Asian dictator, whitewash the Dili massacre, and condone/ignore the many other crimes carried out by the Suharto regime. 'National interests' and 'political interests'= profits of Australian big business. Of course, vigorous denials were issued by Gareth Evans, and threats of libel action by Paul Keating (who cosied up to Sukarno and tried to make secret treaties). Another compelling reason to dislike Paul Keating. |
Point taken. Keating made no secret of his respect and friendship with Suharto. However you conveniently missed out that Sukarno was openly courted by Liberal ministers in the 1960's and his special forces (korpusus) was trained by the Australian military under instruction from Menzies. This same group murdered 1 million Indonesians with tacit support from Menzies who had a phobia for Communists. Howard openly helped Fretelin to gain control over Timor. They didnt do this for the benefit of the Timorese. Access to the Timor Gap natural gas and oil was the major motivating factor. Afterward the same Mssrs Howard and Alexander Downer began to court Bang Bang Susiliano to re-affirm their respect for Indoensian rights over West Papua and Aceh. absolute hippocrates. |
If you jog your memory - Downer was in a conundrum over the West Papua refugees. he wanted to deport them back to Indonesia as their separatist movement apparently was less important to the Libs than the Timorese.
The poor old "fuzzy wuzzies" (Isnt that what the diggers at Kokoda trail called them after they risked their lives helping Australian troops) didnt get any sympathy from Howard. |
Yes I agree, both sides are absolute hypocrites. "Sukarno was openly courted by Liberal ministers in the 1960's " I didn't purposely miss out the Libs, I have no admiration for that asskissing syncophant Menzies - Maralinga and Vietnam are two good reasons to despise him. I don't admire the Libs but I admire the ALP even less. "Access to the Timor Gap natural gas and oil was the major motivating factor." And keeping them from Indonesia I imagine. |
They were deported because the govt. cannot allow a rebel group to operate from Australia. New Guinea wanted its independence from Australia, they got it. QED. "Isnt that what the diggers at Kokoda trail called them after they risked their lives helping Australian troops" Yes, my uncle was at Kokoda. I would have risked my life helping the Aussies too if Japanese occupation were the alternative. There is a dark side to the picture, Australian forces executed New Guineans who aided the Japanese. |
***the govt. cannot allow a rebel group to operate from Australia.*********
Jose Ramos Horta and President Guzmao were allowed to operate Fretlin from Australia. The Indonesians claim Fretelin carried out terrorist acts. So how come some separatists are given a country and others are labelled terrorists.?? |

i did and i was embarrased...cos i believe hes only doing this to take everyones mind off high cost of living since he took over....and while he was at it, he there should have been a sorry to the english kids who were brought here during the war, who never saw their families again...oh yes and for those of these children who were abused by catholic priests...they deserve a sorry too...there is no doubt our aborigines were treated terribly...but the conditions they lived in were abhorent, and the people removing them believed they were doing the right thing...sorry is only a word, and without follow up help its a pretty meaningless gesture...oh yes and the behaviour of rudds staffers was appalling...they should be sacked...ohhh maybe rudd could apologise on their part to brendan nelson... |
In short - what benefits Australia at the time, ie 'politics'. IMO, nobody should be allowed to operate any such organisation from Australia, but I'm a mere voter, what do I know. |
I think Rudd "siezed the momemt" to put his name in history. And he has..... As to the sincerity of his gesture, I think you have to take it on face value. I hardly think "Dr" Brendan Nelson deserves an apology, he was the worst education minister in the history of this country. He should apologise to universities. |
