Cape Verde islands: Philippa Clarke explores the 'European Caribbean'

Ideally situated off the West Coast of Africa, kept cool from the stifling tropical heat by gentle trade winds, and with mile upon mile of white deserted sand, it was dubbed the "European Caribbean". Sadly, the recession meant that all the early promise of luxurious developments and resort hotels did not happen with the expected speed.
