Wow! Suborbital flights taking off from the Big Island! These rocket planes fly higher than the international boundry located between the Earth and Space which is known as the Karman Line. It's hard to believe jet fuel, even synthetic jet fuel, doesn't harm the environment, but I guess we'll take their word for it until the EIS and EA reports come out. I'm just wondering how the state will come up with $500,000 for the FAA/AST licensing. I'm also wondering how many "high-end" tourists can come up with $200,000 for the tickets?
Maybe they should take the $half mil which will be used for federal aviation licensing out of HTA funds.

WHY do HAWAII TAX-PAYERS have to PAY $500,000 for this???
If it is SO GREAT and PROFITABLE- why aren't the people running this business pay for it?
This seems like a total SCAM on Hawaii Tax-Payers during what is going to be a very BIG and LONG ECONOMIC DEPRESSION!
Yeah that's right. If it gets off the ground that would be fine. But what if decision makers decide to circumvent some environmental laws and these space entrepreneurs realize that Hawaii is a difficult place to do business and decide to bail out on us and go the way of the Hawaii Superferry? Being that I am a state worker, the money would be better spent giving me a raise.

You should be stoked about the spaceport. Maybe this will give you a chance to return to your home planet.

Wait, a SPACEPORT? You mean for going to space? A spaceport? Perhaps I heard you wrong, I thought you said spaceport.......Seriously?
The simpletons on this island can't even properly fill a pothole, and will never get around to building a rail system, but now they want to try their hands at facility designed to put vehicles in space........got it.
Here's some advice...stick to banging coconuts together, smoking ice and ripping off tourists.

Spaceport.......Ha. Now THATS a good one.

I sort of doubt if anyone is going to drag the extra weight of air breathing engines into space, like the picture implies. And any vertical launch would involve solid fuel launchers which do put out some nasty exhaust. The exhaust was one of the big reasons the original spaceport in Ka'U was a non-starter, all of Kona would have been breathing and raincatching perchlorate residue. Rutan's mother ship concept where the space plane gets carried up to 50,000 feet before launch is a good idea, and 500,000$ for a great future tourist attraction is a good investment. The big fly in the ointment that I see is the spaceplane comes back in for a "dead-stick" landing. That would be possible at Hilo airport , but waving off all the other traffic at Honolulu International/ Hickam AFB would be impossible.
