Mummies come to Cicero

I've been to Guanajuato twice on extended vacations. I think of all the attractions there the mummies are among the tackiest and uninteresting.

The town is gorgeous, with Spanish style plazas, cobble stone streets, and crystal clear weather. It's a wonderful place to wonder around, shop, drink and dine. Geographically it's mostly tucked into a small valley and you can scale the sides for a grand view.

Getting to Guanajuato is easy from Mexico City and other central cities. First class bus is the way to go - these large, tour-style buses can take you there in style and comfort for a few tens of dollars. Once at the bus terminal outside of town, central Guanajuato is just a short taxi ride through some cool tunnels.

Guanajuato has several hostels and nice hotels, and despite our increasingly slipping dollar, it's still a very affordable place to visit. Great place to get away, read a book (or write a book!)

What a poorly written article! Where will the mummies be on display? The Cicero gym is noted as the original proposal, but it's not clear that this location was ultimately what was approved. And, how about an address? Come one, Trib, this is just sloppy....

I've been to Guanajuato also. I highly recommend visiting the real Mexico not just a Marriot on the beach. However, I didn't see the mummies. I find it offensive to dig up graves and display the remains. In Mexico this practice is too common. My Grandparents remains were destroyed in my families' Mexican hometown's cemetery. They were buried in a mass grave in the 1918 flu pandemic. The space was needed for more burials.
As far as picking Cicero, I find that absolutely revolting. If I offend any one from Cicero, I say tough. Cicero stands for racism and the crime syndicate. Nothing else.

It's sad that you can't mention anything about Mexico without it drawing hateful comments from ignorant people.

Mexico is a beautiful country. The Mexican people are wonderful.

But until people shed their hatred and disdain for other cultures then I suppose this is the sort of discourse when can continue to expect.

Either that or comment sections such as this should start testing poster's IQs before allowing them to proceed.

Perhaps your remains will be on display one day,
for all to gawk at.

I haven't yet scrolled to the bottom of the page for the latest comments, but the ones that precede yours are certainly not hateful. Critical? Yes, and I agree with some of the criticism. Like that this was a sloppily-written article!

Thanks for the input. I was debating whether to visit Queretaro, which I recommend, again, or another colonial city for vacation in September.

I've got news for you, after people are dead they are not part of the world we know of and after a couple of generations they surely belong to God only, and not you. Also, you're talking about the Cicero of the past, which is overcoming its sordid past (xenophobia, mob stuff, and, by the way, presently well stocked with all sorts of "minorities"). It's JUST outside of Chicago (which has an equal share of gangs) and will not be an inconvenience to travel there. I lived in Guanajuato for six months. Our friends told us that if we didn't see the mummies, it would be like we were never really there. I guess we were never really there.

I really hope that this exhibit doesn't bring too many tourists to Guanajuato. I would hate to see this beautiful city overrun like nearby San Miguel. The money is nice, but god they are obnoxious.

You have to be a sick (mentally) person to want to see this circus side show.

I heard they didn't have a large venue to display the mummies in Round Lake Beach

Hey - Vicente Fox of the "There is no doubt that Mexicans, filled with dignity, willingness and ability to work are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do there in the United States," what kind of sick individuals removed a corpse from a cemetary because the GRAVE TAX (OMG don't let Todd Stroger hears that one)? What dignity is there in showing bodies of people who should be in their final resting place but instead are the fodder for jokes.
