Iraq lays out rules for 1st round of oil bids

Iraq's oil minister met 34 oil company representatives in London on Monday to set out the ground rules for foreign multinationals' first bite at the country's enormous energy reserves since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

Let's see how well the U.S. does in this bidding process. We already botched an opportunity to secure a multi-billion dollar oil services contract China ultimately secured in September. Time will tell.

We should be the ones securing the first 20 bids at a price WE set, and dictating who may even "peek" at the rest...

We did liberate Iraq, right? That doesn't mean we get to tell them what to do from now on.

I am certain that the United States will get preferential treatment.

I would hope we get preferencial treatement we have given them billions and lives the least they can do is give us a cheap price. Not saying we should take it but also we should get a better deal than a country who wouldn't help liberate them.

I see what you are saying, but it cheapens the reason we spent all that money and wasted all those lives. If we were honorable, we would have done all that because it needed to be done, and was the right thing to do, not for a reward later.

If the Iraqi government has any honor, they will show it by giving us a little preferential treatment, but as a free and sovereign nation, they are under no obligation to do so.

I agree with you we wanted them to be a free nation and now they are so they have the right to choose what to do. I would just hope after we did assist them and in the process basicaly split our country down party lines in the process they would help out a little.

All you guys are wrong. Iraq sided with Iran, China, Russia the CSTO ASEANS and primarily SHANGHAI COOPERATION ORGANIZATION.

You guys still dont get it. ALL OF IRAQ is ANTI AMERICA even the kurds. Cooperation is based on common interest. Kurds and Shia have a relationship with IRAN that trumps American relationship. America is just a useful King demoted to roll as a pawn. No American is safe in Iraq and nor is its business intrests guaranteed even allies like turkey Sauds Kuwaitis will be or have already working covertly to undermine American intrests not to mention every nation in the neighborhood.
Havent you noticed their are no celebrations honoring Americans by Iraqis their are no outpouring of Iraqis or support for any american project. IRAQIS HATE AMERICA

Well, if the marketplace shakes out so that selling to China brings top dollar, maybe profits trump sentimentality.

Besides, who invited Bush and Cheney in the first place?

iraqi shia frontman maliki needs to remember that saddam hussein threatened to sell oil in the EURO instead of the dollar he signed his death warrant. economist joseph stiglitz figures u.s. will spend $100,000.00 per iraqi citizen before u.s. finally leaves.

I'm sure the Iraqi kids will think fondly of being treated like dogs.
As Habib steadies his breathing and takes the first weight on the trigger of the Dragunov, he's hoping that "Adams" is the soldier who crosses his sights, after Adams called him a "dirty sand nugget" during the strip search and subsequent beating and humiliated his friend Ahmed, suffering still from the wounds he received when the Marines napalmed Falujah, for being "ugly and stupid".

Patience and vengeance is like sand in the dry wastes of Arabia.

It never runs out.

I was boarding Iraqi fishing vessels off the Al Faw in 2002 and 2003. I had many Iraqi's that welcomed us aboard their ships, I haved been offered tea, fish, prawns, and fruit.

I think your making statements based on misinformation, less than credible sources and biased MSM.

What strange times! Back in the 20's Gulbenkian held all the chits for Iraqi oil (it wasn't Iraq then), and he sold them to the big shots with the understanding that there would be no meaningful drilling. Well, the same bidders are back. How Iraqis will deal with it remains to be seen.
