United Air Will Start Charging for Meals in Coach on Some Overseas Flights

United Airlines , struggling to curb losses from record fuel prices, will become the first U.S. carrier to stop serving free meals in the coach cabin of some overseas flights.

Also at United, free snacks will be eliminated in the coach cabin of North American flights of 760 miles to 1,149 miles, or 2 to 3 hours. They will be replaced with snacks for sale, effective Sept. 2, the memo said. As of Oct. 1, the airline also will boost prices for fresh items sold during flights to $9 from $7; the cost of non-perishable foods will climb to $6 from $5.

Transcon, or Trans Atlantic from the east coast. 5 hours is 5 hours, overland or water is the only difference

I would like to see a comparison chart on how much the airlines are actually saving with all of these recent charges. It has gotten so bad that Continental charges returning active duty personal from Iraq a fee for their 3rd bag. This is absolutely insane and sickening. Someone is going to have to start to take pay cuts at the top and put those resources back into the company. United didn't properly bring the company out of bankruptcy and now they are paying for it. If you ask me, out of all the legacy carriers, the American management teams and executives did the best. Keeping them out of bankruptcy in the toughest era of airline flying ever! Bravo!

And the morons running the airlines continue to make their self-destructive decisions.

It floors me how horrendously bad airline management is. They just don't know how to run an airline. All they keep doing is charging the customer. Why don't they take a lesson from most international carriers, not just on management but on service as well.

I love airline food, especialy the lasagna. I was told Tilton takes left over coach meals home to feed his family.

I think international carriers are owned by the Government, can you imagine if President Bush owned the airlines,(round them up and let them fend for themselves they don't need food ) it's interesting that the ceo's aren't sufferning pay cuts only employees

Not one thing in your quote is true. Suggest a little bit of research on your part.

If the buyer doesn't like the price or the product they shouldn't buy it. No one has ever promished that eveyone has the right to fly where, when and how at what is perceived to be a good price. It seems that everyone wants to fly in F/C on a the cheapest fare. If Southwest is your choice fly it but don't complain about Delta, American, Northwest etc. Stick to your guns or don't fly...Drive Greyhound

8 posts! 8 of them! No one has yet to blame the United employees themselves for this development! Trust me they HATE selling it as much as you HATE buying it! I left this downwards spiral carrier over five years ago and I am SOOOOOO glad I did! I feel for my former crew who still go to work and do their job and HOPE it gets better. Wish their were a way they could chain Tilton, his executive committee and the BOD to carts to sell the crap and listen to the customers who have suffered over the years. "Revenue Generating Charges" God forbid one of them not get that seven digit bonus.....
