I used to be 100% in favor of the death penalty.

Then as I grew older I only favored it for certain heinous crimes. Now I am totally against it.

Even if it can be 100% proven someone committed the crime they are being punished for, the state should incarcerate the person for the remainder of their lives, not execute them.

We have seen all too often people get proven innocent after being put on death row. You can't "unkill" some one after you find out they were wrongly convicted.

I have to admit, I'm still on the fence. It's a battle between the emotional response and itellectual thought.

Im in the middle. I think sometimes it would be worse for someone to rot in jail and have to think about what they did.

But...do they care? Also, what if there is a chance they escape and they are on the loose again. That is my dilema.

That was me for a while too...you may want to watch this on either rental if you can find it or on IFC is you have that channel at home...

It's a look at the subject from the standpoint of a Texas death row chaplain. It's really compelling.

That was also mine for quite a while. I understand how you feel. Whoever we put behind bars for legitimate reasons, I just want it to be the right one. We need to be much more precise about evidence IMO, especially in a capital murder case.

The death penalty is final. Look how many cases have been screwed up by our judicial system. Plea bargaining, DNA testing

i think there should be more of it, or death penalty. did you know that 70% of crimes committed with a gun are committed by repeat offenders? they've already been to prison at least a couple times and yet they go back to their ways. prison doesn't "fix" them. it makes them worse or hardens them.

if their are eye witnesses, dna, video tape, or if the plea is "no contest", for god's sake fry 'em. no use in sending the 'ol "yes we are a gullible society" message out to our juvenile delinquents. but do we? no. and we have the media reflect this in shows. we have youth identifying with crime and hate. if we weren't so stupid they'd be 'identifying' with stupidy = death.

but no, we have to give them a second chance to screw up someone elses life... so that way when they finally get out of prison and working at mickey d's we can sue them for our coffee being too hot and our kids getting fat.

ignorance. lazyiness and stupidity. THATS whats ruining the country.

That is true.

Back in January, my cousin's son (18months old) was murdered by his babysitter. This happened in CT, they do have the death penalty. The story was on topix for quite a while, and there was mixed emotions on weather she should have the death sentence or not.

The killer has 2 children of her own,(who watched her kill Elijah) I think her sitting in jail, forever and not being able to hold her kids is a more painful death than being electrocuted.

I have a real problem with letting people like Ted Bundy, The D.C. sniper and many other mass murders rot in jail at the tax payers expense. However, many poor and/or inncoent people have been wrongly convicted of murder and executed in our screwed up Judicial system, so I am on the fence. I support the death penalty, but I think we need to require DNA or some other additional evidence in order to sentence a person to death. Also all corrupt prosecutors should have to serve prison time for any evidence tampering.

Yep...I wish more of us felt that way. I really did start out being ardently in favor of the death penalty but the more I looked into it the less I liked it. Then, when you see that mentally deficient people get that penalty and don't understand what's being done to them (Texas for one) I just can't be for something like that, and then the rest of the reasons begin to unravel.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cousin's son...that is absolutely awful...

Thank you. Yes, it was a very sad time.

Agree with you about the disabled. They should be in a home, not put to death for something they didn't know was wrong.

Discuss on the thread "Christian Lies Exposed"
If one believes in the Christian God and believes the Bible is the word of God, then we can make some logical assumptions taken directly from God’s word or Scripture.
If a child dies of a terrible sickness or is molested, tortured, murdered or a family member life destroyed by a terrible sickness, then it is OF GOD. This can be proven with the very words of "GOD". Let us Begin:
To EVERY THING there is a season (time), and a time to EVERY purpose under heaven Ecc. 3:1
AND
I know that, whatsoever God does....NOTHING can be put to it, nor ANYTHING taken from it: and GOD DOES IT! Ecc 3:14
Yes, when a child is molested, God has already determined it would happen and "GOD DOES IT". Directly from the word of God.
More translations of the same scripture:
"...for He has appointed a time for every matter, and for every work..."
"For He has set a season for every event and for every deed..."
Lets look at a few more scriptures that help us clarify just what God does according to HIS words.
“…Who works [‘operates’] ALL THINGS after the counsel of His own will”(Eph. 1:11).
“For OF Him, and THROUGH Him, and TO Him, are ALL THINGS…”(Rom. 11:36).
Yes, that includes each time a Child is molested...ALL THINGS are of God and GOD works ALL things.
“And ALL THINGS are of God…”(II Cor. 5:;18).
Christian will say, this is not true, because we choose to do those bad things. What does God’s word state?
“O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man that walks to direct his steps”(Jer. 10:23). So I guess it is really God that “operates all in all”
Let us clarify this even more:
"God is operating ALL in all" (I Cor. 12:6) What does it mean to operate? It means to CONTROL the FUNCTION! Pretty Clear and happens to come directly from God's word.
“…shall there be evil [Heb: ra—‘bad, evil’] in a city, and the Lord has not done it?(Amos 3:6)
EVIL
“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil”(Isa. 45:7).
God stated that he created the wicked for the evil day and the waster to destroy! Directly from the word of God!
Yes, if a child is molested, it is OF God....according to the bible.
"In Whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the PURPOSE of Him Who works (is operating) ALL THINGS after... After the COUNSEL of His OWN WILL" (Eph. 1:11)!
Yes, God operates/works ALL things, created evil and the wicked, created Satan and before ordained ALL in the beginning of time, according to the Bible. Yes, God is the reason a child is molested and the reason Hitler killed millions of Jews. God made it clear,“EVERHTING is OF HIM”,“ALL is of GOD” and you can do “NOTHING but for the will of God”.

Since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, nobody has ever been proven innocent after being put on death row. However, more than 480 innocent victims have been murdered by murderers who were not executed after their first murder conviction. How do you feel about those murdered people? Can you unkill them?

You just have to look at the number of cases that have been reversed due to revisiting of the DNA evidence to know that the death penalty is wrong.
