Foreign schools spend all of their time teaching history and language. Yes, its true that your average Frenchman knows more about the American Civil War than the average American does. Now when it comes to current things like medicine, engineering, space travel, computers, or anything like that, while American schools dont waste time teaching about years past or languages that Americans would never need to know they are instead using that time to teach about relevant topics of education. I still remember the German who had an attitude when nobody could debate her on the War of 1812. "You mean you dont know more than me about your own history? Pfft." Yeah, she looked real smart until she stepped into the OR and we found out that in Germany she was used to doing general anesthesia procedures that we have not done in the US for over 40 years. I always tell people to make sure their doctors are American because foreign docs are way behind. But then, they know alot about the War of 1812. To bad their patients die on the table. At least they can know that the doctor who killed them can speak more than one language.

I would like to apologize for the post I made earlier about the French. Where as I had a bad memory of my vacation regarding the French, I know several French people that I concider my good friends. So, I guess it's just a few "bad apples" that turned me off.

You got that one right MIKE! hell where are all the FRENCH in AUGUST, on vacation they have no one there to even run their friking hospitals or government. Mr. Globalcitizen, you obviously do not understand our education system or our people. We actually have one of the best educational systems world wide. If you are pointing at test scores in some areas please keep in mind that we include all persons in our education system, unlike China where only a few students per a class advances to the next grade...
And speaking as someone who speaks French, Spanish, English (very properly may I add), and Italian I can tell you that the reason they speak those languages so readily is because they are romantic languages, hence very similiar and quick to pick up, once you know one.
As far as German (which I can also get by in), many communities still communicate in what is commonly called Pennsylvania Dutch. The German language was more prominent until WWII. There were many newspapers and radio stations that aired only in German, but when Hitler declared war on America anything associated with German language or the dictator was considered bad. Hence, many people with German surnames also would change, e.g. Schmidt became Smith.
There is a large majority whom speak Spanish, simply because of the necesity. Even though they (the Latins, Hispanics, etc.) came to this country, they have refused to learn the language...
So when Mr. Obama says he is embarrassed, he does not know or care to know the America that I know and LOVE. I have lived throughout Latin America and Asia, and have travelled extensively throughout Europe and Africa and I tell you, if you do not appreciate the U.S. leave it. And do not bother blogging about something you do not know, nor that you can not or dare not take the time to understand.

Non of the humanities such as history, art,geography etc. are a waste of time-that is simply the difference between an truly cultured and uncultured person.Many universities are gutting humanities programs in the U.S.(conservatives love doing this) in favor of science,engineering and math, so this shouldn't worry the technoctaic types too much.Germany prior to World War I was much the same-heavily geared towards science (especially weapons), with a highly conservatiove ideological humanities curriculum as a substitute for actual knowledge to make sound informed decisions about life and politics from. The end result was an educated population that knew science and technology well, but little else(mindless authoritarianism, unquestioning obedience and racialist, anti-Semitic superstitions ended up substituting for these deficits).If a German knows more about U.S. history than an American does, then shame on the American for being too intellectually lazy to know or care about what separates the U.S. from mindless Prussian tradition (or any history period).

more than a quarter of doctors of America are foreigners.
with the trend continuing, more than 1/3rd of them would be foreigners in 20 years time.

Antone who studies history, economics, and or has lived and worked and done something to get themselves ahead is in awe of the suckers that think he is some kind of savior. With respect to speaking foreign languages, many people do but it is not as important to know them in the US. The reason Europeans know more languages is a matter of Geography not education. I have traveled all over the world and have never had a real problem communicating or getting along even if there is a language barrier. Obama again is pandering to the self hating, lazy, do nothing, cry for help idiots waiting for the government to solve their problems. I served 24 years in the military, and traveled worldwide. I always learned enough of the local language to be courteous. Even while visiting my daughter in Hawaii, which of course is a US State, but does have it's own culture.

on the contrary Spanish should become a second language to usa.
its the native language of 50 million Americans whose community will rise to 100 million by 2050 or more.
another 70 to 80 million Americans will live in areas with either majority Hispanic populations or high concentration of them.
aside from that 600 million Americans speak it so it a lingua franca for the American continental area. Portuguese and Spanish are essentially one language, and is really easy to catch up on it.
a win win for non Hispanic Americans.
