We made a commitment to the UN's Millennium Development goals, and this bill seeks to strengthen and enforce, even make us accountable for, that commitment.
Expensive? Absolutely, but given what we've been pissing trillions away on lately, it's well worth the money.
That is exactly why the bill when examined by our legislators and the public will fail. THe bill is basically a tax on American taxpayers by the U.N. authorized by our Congress. Trillions of dollars pulled from our economy to be sent to undeveloped nations will destroy our economy and our nation. Money totally down the toliet. Money that we are spending in Iraq and Afganistan is money well spent. How much did the 9/11 attack cost our economy ? Multiply that attack costs by two, three, four and up and then compare that cost to what we are spending in Iraq and Afganistan. NO additional attacks on our soil is money well spent.

<quoted text>I am just as compassionate for the impoverished as any liberal, but I do not think that any govt. can manage any program successfully that raises the standard of living of those people. The waste is unbelievable since the programs ALWAYS become sink holes in which it takes more and more dollars to keep them operational. We as a nation have been subsidizing the impoverished for decades yet we continue to take two steps back for every step forward. Throughout history in any nation that you care to mention, making dependents out of a segment of society always increases the number of those dependents. We have generations of dependents now in the U.S. and if we extend that thinking to the impoverished nations, the same will be true. I suspect that this is the goal of liberals in that they can always depend on the votes of those people. Obama's legislation will NEVER pass.

Nothing I've read says it would cost near what you speculate. I think you're inflating the numbers to strengthen your position.

And it's disingenuous to even hint that the trillion we threw down a hole in the middle east has made us safer from terrorist attacks. We're more vulnerable right now than we were on 9/10/01. It's a shame we couldn't have that trillion back to secure our borders or search more than 2% of all shipping containers that enter US ports.

Bush's Blunder in Iraq is no NO way money well spent. Unless you're on the board of KBR, of course.

The cost of 9/11 is still being calculated. It sent ripple effects throughout every facet of our economy. Sorry if you cannot see that. We have not had a repeat of 9/11 under this administration and that speaks volumes as to successes. We will always be at logger heads over this one so best we let it go!

We're talking about the absolutely unnecessary invasion of Iraq, not the excuse Bush used in order to lie his way into that war.

How many years passed between the first WTC attack and the 2nd? 7 years.

And you're claiming success because it's been 7 years, since the last attack?

Those are some pretty small volumes.

One major attack during this Administration and how many under the prior Administration ? This Administration has done more right than wrong in the fight against international terrorism as seen by the results. If Iraq was a mistake, don't just limit the mistake to the Bush team and conservatives. There were numerous libs pushing for taking Saddam out and reducing Iraq to ashes. Under the Clinton Administration, all I heard was that Saddam was on the verge of securing nuclear weapons and we have to take action now. Turns out the Libs were correct since the Iraqis just sold 500 metric tons of "yellow cake" to Canada that Saddam had ready to turn into around 130 nuclear warheads. Now what ws the name of the terrorist training camp in Iraq that was used to train terrorists in hijacking passenger jets ? I know the libs just hate it when their past keeps getting in the way of what they are now saying.

b. obama's statement is true, so if you are offended you are just out of touch, or plugged into fox news for many hours a day. those offended have been successfully brainwashed by a slime machine run by rich whites dudes who sit around laughing that poor, ignorant people vote for them even though it is outside their personal interest. as a nation we have to grow up and realize that there are not always two sides to every argument. sometimes one of these parties are just wrong.

You're into summer reruns now?

Let's skip past the next 30 posts where it turns out the "500 tons" is a dodge, that the terrorists who attacked us were from Saudi Arabia, not Iraq, and how the variety of homegrown terror plots we've learned of over since 2002 debunk the "we have to fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here" mantra chanted by so many warmongers.

So, you were trying to justify the trillion dollars of US tax dollars spent on the invasion and occupation of Iraq?

It would be a disaster if we as a nation could disregard happenings and pretend that they never occurred. Selective memory loss only encourages the identical thing to happen again. I consider the 500 metric tons of 'yellowcake' a serious situation when Saddam was in power. The media did not make a big deal out it since they did not want to acknowledge the ingredient is a major step toward nuclear weapons. This would just not fit in with their agenda of slamming the Bush Administration. The terrorist training camp found inside of Iraq was briefly mentioned, so the media is culpable again. Money well spent in Iraq and Afganistan.

I don't. It had been sealed by the IAEA's since the end of the first gulf war. It's a red herring.

Correction, a red herring that you can use to draw flawed and faulty conclusions.

Money well spent in Afghanistan. Money pissed away in Iraq. And that doesn't even include the billions sent to Iraq that have vanished.
