I don't want no one shining my shoes. But for Obama to say a very STUPID comment such as this. That goes to show how much of an IDIOT he is. I could give to craps about learning french or any other language after my English and Spanish. To bad people are so OBTUSE and listen to garbage like this and like it.

The majority of americans (and some other countries - you know who you are) visit places and expect everyone to speak their language.

Of course we dont speak French, why should we? Everyone educated person living in a foreign country learns English because we run this planet, they just live here. And if they piss us off then maybe they have WMDs...

Americans in general are stupid.Teachers think my kids ability to speak both Spanish and Enghlish is a handicap instead of an advantage.

While it's true that it only takes a few "ugly American" tourists to give our country a bad rap, it works both ways ya know. But at least with "merci beaucoup" they were trying.

A few years ago my brother and I were on a cruise in Russia, and there was a large contingent of French (Parisien?) on board.

You try and strike up a conversation with them by asking where they were from, Paris? LaHarve? Normandie? and they just shrug their shoulders and looked blank. You can't tell me they didn't understand what we were saying! It wasn't until my brother pointed to himself and said "Omaha Beach" that they even acknowledged he was alive.

So, as far as the French are concerned, I say Screw the frogs!!!! bunch of snobby, arrogant bastards! If you want to visit the U.S, speak ENGLISH!!!!

Most people will agree that people in/from Paris are not overly friendly - but, it is like that in any large city. I have also heard that the French don't make friends quickly, hence their reluctance for chit-chat. When we were there, people were always polite to us, but not ebullient. I think they are just more formal than we are.

I can tell you that while we were there, especially in Normandy, people would stop us on the street and ask us if we were American. I was hesitant the first time it happened to me, but each time they thanked us for our participation in the liberation of France. Just like once they knew your brother had participated in D-Day, they were more open to conversation.

Only once did I hear some negative comments about us (group of young people), but then my brother and our tour guide started talking to some of the guys and they found out we had a lot in common with them - they hate their politicians as much as we do :)

I am struggling to learn French now because I want to be able to travel there without an interpreter. I speak just enough Spanish to get by - not bilingual by any means.

in a global economy, it it advantageous to know multiple languages. It doesn't have to be Spanish. Hell, with China, India, Russia and all the other growing economies, there are a multitude of languages that would be useful in the business world. In the 80's we were told to learn Japanese as business students - I didn't, I studied Latin and Italian.

most european speak 2-3 and many time 4-5 different languages.

you see italians speaking french, spanish, english many times german and their own language, where is usa you struggle to learn proper english, and i supsect the britons would have an opjection where you stuck oil on that either.
