Hello there. I'm an Army brat, have lived or visited pretty much everywhere, thanks to my late father. He sacrificed a lot during his Army career to show my mother, sisters and I the world. I'd love to talk to other military brats, veterans and current soldiers on this thread about anything that has to do with the lives we have had. My dad was someone who looked for opportunities in the Army to go outside the US, so we lived in Germany, India and The Philippines and visited loads of other places. Sometimes I still wish I lived in the same town all my life, never had to lose friends or change schools, and then I think back on how awesome it was to see the Pyramids of Giza, have lunch on a houseboat in Hong King Harbor, fly into Keflavik Iceland while a volcano was erupting a few miles off the coast...and so many other wild and wonderful things, and I'm glad I got to live the life I have. How about you?

How about you? I'm not an army brat nor was ever in the military. That's a great childhood story, FundieSmacker. Most children don't get to experience that much cultural and international richness at such a young age. I'm grateful to your father for serving our country and thanks for sharing your story.

As Jimmy Durante used to say, "I got a million of 'em!". Thanks Fish! There were not so fun parts of that life also, but when I think of seeing sunrise in Manila Harbor on a cruise ship, flying into what was then Saigon on Air America to visit dad through cleared airspace (THAT was wild) and hearing Howitzers going off that night at the Blair House...many many other stories...I'm so happy my father did what he did.

Hubby should be home from Afghanistan in 48 days and he is thinking of going to Kosovo for a year. We can all go and live amongst the community. I have a desperate desire to experience different cultures. Best of luck with your new thread! I will post on a daily basis!

Hello Fundie...and everyone else. I served in the United States Army for 4 yrs starting in 1997-2001. My Husband and I signed up together he Infantry and me a 92A (logistics) I went to Basic at Fort Jackson, SC and then my AIT(Advanced Individual Training) at Fort Lee, Va while my husband was at Fort Benning, Ga. We both had great opprotunities thrown at us, him Ranger school and me Airborne School but when we were told we would have been stationed seperately we decided not to take those opprotunities. We met up after our AIT's in Fort Hood, TX where we stayed the whole 4 yrs. I was in the 1st Cav, 3rd Brigade 215th FSB in the Motorpool ordering parts and even working on the Humvees and 5 tons as well as other vehicles and he was in 4th ID 1st Brigade. We were both deployed all the time and I was even fortunate enough to go to Kuwait for about 5 1/2 months in 2000. We decided to get out in 2001 and start a family, which we did. We both ETS'ed as SGT's. I am very honored to have served my country and would do it all again if I could. Thank you for starting this thread and thank you to all the TROOPS that are still serving as well as their wives/husbands and families that support them. To the VETS you are more appreciated than you know and thank you as well for all you had to endure to ensure our freedoms. ><><><YOU ALL ROCK!><><><

My Grandfather, Harry Reeves, was a Lt. Colonel in the Marines during WWII. He was also granted special position by President Roosevelt and Chiang Kai Shek in the Chinese resistance army with the rank of General. He spent over a year behind enemy lines in China moving weapons and gold. A bounty was placed on him by the Japanese government. He went on to join the FBI and later in his career, became a detective in the Detroit police force. He was also an Olympic pistol shooter with several world records and gold medals. He was also a Director in the NRA. I miss him very much. He has a pistol match at Campy Perry, OH that is dedicated to him. He loved this country and was a great man. My father was in the Army Combat Engineers stationed in Germany during the late 50's and early 60's. My sister was in the Army for a short time at Fort Jackson until she was discharged due to injuries to her legs. Her husband served in the Army all over the place. Fort Bragg, Fort Benning, and Fort Lewis. He did two tours in Kuwait, one in Saudi Arabia, and one at Guantanamo Bay. I wanted to serve, but due to my diabetes, could not. Nothing but respect and admiration for those that serve and have served.

My dad served in Vietnam twice, and we were at Clark AFB the second time he went so mom could talk to him on the phone here and there. We were fortunate enough to see the first POW's get off the planes on Clark field...the pictures from that time don't do it justice. I saw a guy being carried off on a stretcher holding up the flag. Anyway, I look forward to sharing memories with whoever wants to about whatever they'd like to talk about. Thanks again, to you and to all who respond...

My dad was a shoe salesman when he met my mother and was in the reserves, this was back in 1953. Then when he met her (he had five other girlfriends and dropped them all for her) he figured he'd better do something with his life. He had a choice between IBM, an unknown back then relatively, or the Army, and chose the Army. We went to Germany (Stuttgart), then after a couple of stops we went to Ft Sill, OK, then to Ft Ord...then dad went to Vietnam while we were there, then we went to Ft Bliss, then to India for a year, then to DC for five, then he went back to Vietnam and we relocated to Clark AFB, then he went to Ft Bragg NC, two years as a batallion commander there, then retired. That was the readers digest version. I guess I'll expand on it some other time.
