I do not like the process of the electoral college. I think the popular vote should be the process otherwise it is not a true democratic process! As I understand it only a few actually have their votes counted. The delegates from each state could be unduly influenced since it is such a small number. I do hate to point out that Bush would not have been president if the popular vote would have been the process. Any thoughts on this from anyone.

I agree!I just saw this thread.I have worked for the politics of my town.I was offered a job to work in this township, but one has to be "sponsered" by some elected official.Being just out of high school and my parents said it would be a good, stable job that I can stay till retirement or look for a better job while emplyed there, but at least I was told it is a stable job I would never lose.Well,I was laid off 3 months later.I did'nt want to "play' politics at so young an age,I wanted to run around after work, and at night,as any young person would want to do,but politics wanted my time day and night,so I fell from grace. While I worked at the voting poll,I endored the ones running. After I was laid off,I voted against my party since. They win every time!Even as the demografics changed, people that knew of nothing of the current and past GOP scum, they still won the elections, each and every one.A bit unusual, being the majority now living in town are democrates, yet the GOP keep getting elected? What the hell? Why do the same ones keep getting elected?33 years, change of party affilliation of voters, yet the GOP still get reelected? The only answer is that the votes don't count.A waste of time,a pasifier for the voters,to have them think their votes will make a difference. My father worked for the county and during election time, his duty was to help deliver voting machines. When the votes were over and the voting machines returned, and as the votes were counted, not one democrate is ever present.Gee.I wonder why the GOP was re-elected?These elected officials sold us out! They "pocketed" federal grant money, but to get it,they had to allow HUD to set up low cost housing, for low lifes, that now dominate this town and crime has sharply risen, middle class income workers began to move out.And yes,the ones that pocketed some of the funds, have received jail time, repercussions of those actions still go on.I detest politics.I do not watch any political conventions now being aired, that "vaudiville act" put on by them and so many buy into it.Look at how Hilliary debated aginst Obama, now she supports him.Few seem to see this bull crap being done before their very eyes. It's all propaganda, and so many believe it.I worked in and around politics and its all a shame! This has been done throughout history. The general voting public still think it matters.

I was tying to get a discussion going on The current system of electors, is not a fair way of counting the votes. A few deciding for the rest of us.

Hoffmeister I commend someone who is young at least trying to understand the system.
Even some of the older generation can't play that game well.

The current system of electors is unfair!Anyway, thanks for saying I'm young, but I was typing about how I came to dislike the political machine, that was years ago.I'm 53 now.I gave a short a story I could because of the many years I have been upset with politics. The Electoral colledge,is a sign of what I speak of,that our votes are virtually valueless."Make believe" for the masses, that we decide who is to be President. When a certain canidate is really wanted to be placed in office, they make sure it's who they want in there. This President, they wanted a buffoon to take the attention away from what really goes on,Bush is there as a scape-goat.They know he is a failure, all Bush's past record demonstrates that. All these conventions, debates are for grandstanding unfortunately. That way,it's easier to do what lobbyists and big buisness want to accomplish, send buisness to foreign countries, whittle away our rights.

Hoffmeister you are still young.lol at least that is what people tell me..When I learned about the way we do elect I was shocked. It is easy to sway a few votes, harder if it was a true vote of the people so I do agree with your statement that big business and a certain group of people can direct who is in office. Sometimes when I tell people that their vote doesn't really count they look at me strangely..

I still vote, but there are s few vote days I passed just because I know it's B.S.I would go just out of respect for our right to vote and to those who fought and gave their lives for that right(among other rights). Now I see going to the polls as a chore similar to doing laundry. That's sad.I know some veterns that also think along the same lines as I do.Too much at risk to let us pions to make policy,so give them a "Make believe" due process of electing a president, keep us happy. In this day of computers, emails,I wonder why we still have to go to a voting location to vote, where these machines are brought in,set up,then taken away when voting day is over.Old fashioned why to vote.I wonder why there are not "AVM"-automate voting machine.I can access my bank account anywhere in a short time, regardless of what bank has the atm.Why can't we have a atm like voting card, place it in an AVM,then cast your vote?Instead of having to be in your home town to vote. These could be permanately set up in municipal buildings, librarys, police headquaters,or post office, activate them when it's election time, deactivate when over.Recieve a receipt of your vote, just as an atm does, theres your paper trail.Banks do it so well, why not when voting?Probably because it's too difficult to manipulate those votes.this is a world connected to the web!Except when it comes to voting.Makes you wonder does'nt it?

I agree I think the current election system and the voting process is just a ploy to make people feel like they have a voice when in reality they they have their own hidden agendas completly unrelated to what the people want or need.. My reasons for thinking this way is much like the people who posted before me.

Oh yeah we need the popular vote like that other great democracy, mexico, that will improve our status so much.

Can anyone actually name a non-third world Democracy or republic that elects executive authority by popular vote?
Remember what I said, executive authority, and if the Government is parlimentary, the answer is no.

So you do feel a few should choose for the many?

From what I understand you and your neighbors can vote till your blue in the face and only the electoral delegates counts for your state. You are only a popular voter.

But the popular vote is what decides who the electors go to. If you don't cast your popular vote, the electors might go to the other guy. I was brought up to believe, if you don't vote, you got no excuse to gripe until the next election. I'm 40 something, and I have voted in every election since I was 18--primaries, state, local and national.

I too voted since the age 18.Now I'm 53.Demographics have changed in my town. Most living here come from the city.largely Democrates.Yet the same people in office are elected, all republicans. Why would so many democrates move in town, not knowing the officials very well,go vote for the opposite party?A large number are also legal immigrants, and again, are not familiar with the current officials, one would think that somewhere along the line, democrates would win at least one term in this town. After a few election days have gone by.I began to think "Well,I already know who won",before the next day results. And I was right. Each and every election for the past 39 years, the same party wins.

No I feel like the selected representatives of the people (the electors) should cast the vote. This evenly distributes influence more fairly across different regions, the whole point of the system. Other wise someone will just promise the megapolis that the rest of country will work there buts off to feed and support them to win the election. Not so complicated, indeed the whole point was to prevent power from going automatically to one group.

The electoral college needs to go...It sucks to feel that your vote doesn't count, and that only a handful of states determine the election year after year...Dammit, my vote is just as important as the next person's!

The reason we have the electoral college is because we are a republic--not a democracy.
