I think the life of pcs and laptops has been increasing over time though. They don't get obsolete as quick as they used to. My pc at home is going strong for 8 years now, and my laptop for 6 years is still more than sufficient.

They are actually obsolete within 2 years , that doesn't mean they wont perform the required tasks though.
The biggest problem in the advancement of computer technology
is the operating systems and software being written for them.
It doesn't keep up and by the time it catches up, the machines have advanced again. Like right now for instance, machines utilize up to 8 system cores, but no software can make much use of them.
In fact most software will only utilize 2 cores.
Machines utilize up to 32 GB ram ,
(windows 64 bit allocates much more) but not much soft wear can take advantage of this.
Slowly it catches up but hardware technology doubles every two years.
