I have also wondered this a while back. I personally understand the confusion only because many people dating back to early America, always use that one-drop rule which is still pretty effective today. Take Halle Berry for example: she let's the public know that her daughter, Nala, is black even though she technically is a quadroon. I'm a Griffe because my biological mother is black, white and American Indian. My father is told to be black, however I have my questions about HIS father (who appears to have features other than African-descent.) *sighs* it's a long story and i don't have room to get into it, BUT I feel that I cannot identify myself as black where I am because I'm a little shade darker than high-yellow and my hair is long, black and spirally all over-and ppl easily make their judgements because of the way I look which really pisses me off. I'm mostly black and I love being black, but someway somehow, others don't view me as BLACK enough, whatever the hell that means...smfh

Griffes and quadroons are not mulatto that is only reserved for people who are 50/50 or half black and half white. Quadroons and griffes are not mixed, they are not pure but I wouldn't call them mixed race also. Most famous Quadroons look white and most of the time identify as such and most famous griffe's look black and identify as such.
Examples:
FAMOUS QUADROONS
*Wentworth Miller
*Mariah Carey
*Soledad's Obrien's Children
*Persia Whites daughter
*Victoria Rowell daughters
*Quincy Jones Daughter Rashida(because it was discovered that quincy had 40-50% european blood a few years back)
*Kris Humphries
* slash's chidren
FAMOUS GRIFFES
*Barack Obama's daughters(Malia ans Sasha Obama are black girls and when asked a few years back Michelle and Barack Obama said their daughters are african americans and black girls)
* Keyshia Cole(calls herself a black woman)- african american mother/biracial father
* Rihanna (calls herslef a black woman not mixed race)-black caribbean mother/biracial caribbean father
* Malcolm X (called himself a black man)- biracial mother/african american father

Majority of the time Griffe's come out looking black, Keyshia Cole, Barack Obama's daughters, Rihanna and Malcolm X are all considered black and consider themselves that even though they are racial griffes in a way

I know right? Intense stuff.
I'm just trying to figure out what I would have been classified as lol.
My grandmother is a "Cascos" but I just classify as "Mullato" since it doesn't specify what Cascos + Black=
:/
I think I'm a Sacatra.
Really your defining yourself as that Your not mixed anymore if anyone behinds your grandparents are white... I'm a griffe and I barely consider myself mixed i only say it when people force me to

I would agree with you, but people ask me what Race I am all the time, so I feel that I am not Black persay. I also don't identify with the culture. My household, has its own culture with more Creole and European influences.
