I don't in any way blame the mom. He's a grown man and his mother had nothing to do with it. When someone commits a crime, it hurts his family too, and the family is not responsible for their 40 y/o children.

Obamabot? What makes you think this man supported Obama?
You're just another partisan hack that wants to blame everything and anything on Obama.

Look at the guy's police photo. He looks like he's on meth.

Drugs are probably the problem.

and?? It is not her fault what a grown man has decided to do! It is apparent she feels remorse for what her son did.. atleast she spoke out about it..why would anyone plan her for what he did...

Thanks to Reagan era social policies people like this are on the streets. Before that the mentally ill got the help that they needed wether they asked for it or not. That era spawned our homeless problem too.

The article said he is a schizophrenic. This is not something he chose to have.
verview

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that makes it difficult to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences, to think logically, to have normal emotional responses, and to behave normally in social situations.
Symptoms

Schizophrenia may have a variety of symptoms. Usually the illness develops slowly over months or even years.

At first, the symptoms may not be noticeable. For example, you may feel tense, or have trouble sleeping or concentrating. You can become isolated and withdrawn, and have trouble making or keeping friends.

As the illness continues, psychotic symptoms develop:

* An appearance or mood that shows no emotion (flat affect)
* Bizarre motor behavior in which there is less reaction to the environment (catatonic behavior)
* False beliefs or thoughts that have nothing to do with reality (delusions)
* Hearing, seeing, or feeling things that are not there (hallucinations)
* Thoughts "jump" between unrelated topics (disordered thinking)

Symptoms can be different depending on the type of schizophrenia.

Catatonic type:

* Agitation
* Decreased sensitivity to pain
* Inability to take care of personal needs
* Negative feelings
* Motor disturbances
* Rigid muscles
* Stupor

Paranoid type:

* Anger
* Anxiety
* Argumentativeness
* Delusions of persecution or grandeur
* Violence

Disorganized type:

* Child-like (regressive) behavior
* Delusions
* Flat affect
* Hallucinations
* Inappropriate laughter
* Not understandable (incoherence)
* Repetitive behaviors
* Social withdrawal

Undifferentiated type may include symptoms of more than one type of schizophrenia.

Residual type -- symptoms of the illness have gone away, but some features, such as hallucinations and flat affect, may remain.

That's interesting, thanks for the information. Is this a genetic condition? Or brought on by some other reason?

Sounds like half of Chicagoland, eh? I kid.

If this man had a know medical problem, shouldn't his loved ones have been more accountable for him?

In any case, he still looks high.

It should be the family's responsibility to take care of their own, not the governments. The US also has many grass roots projects, it is not as if everyone is left to rot.

Many homeless are homeless because they want to be...they like the freedom, and don't like the rules of shelters.

Our society has become so bizarre, how can we take care of everyone? And who's to say who is crazy "before" they do something?

A large part of our population is on prescription or illegal drugs. THIS is one of our worst problems. Sadly, it is widely accepted.

It is genetically related. From what I understand, most signs dont occur until early to mid 20s. I know someone who had a dad and brother with it, very sad to see people like that. Some can live in normal society as long as they take their medications, others have to be instituted. I couldnt imagine living with someone like that.

You're thinking along very inventive lines today, which is brilliant if you're trying to decide what you want to achieve in 2010.
