Ehrmann asserts that he thinks, based on his research, a man named Jesus lived and died in that time period. It is his scholarly opinion.
He has a new book out about it. Seen it at Barnes & nobel this weekend. Thumbed through it. Read some sections. Will not buy. There are on line debates and transcripts. Watched one. He really does not present anything new.
He also says there is absolutedly no evidence that he actually performed miracles, rose from the dead or was the "son" of a "god."
The evidence is in the accounts.
I love it when a fundie believes that an atheist proves his point for him.
As i understand he is agnostic.
If mentioning actual places and historically correct persons in a myth makes the story "true," then we should all be believing in the Greek pantheon.
Do archeologists use the Greek Pantheon to locate dig sites. Like they do the Bible? Besides John's depiction of the Pool of Bethesda and others mentioned adds weight. It diminishes with cold hard facts skeptics beliefs it is all myth.
Try reading the Iliad and the Odyssey. They don't have the "ethereal" qualities of myth either; in fact, they are downright bloody and gory.
Can i find them in the fiction section of Barnes & Nobel?

— Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 —
"Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil — this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart."
__________
God wants us to view what we have (whether it is much or little) with the right perspective — our possessions are a gift from God. Although they are not the source of joy, they are a reason to rejoice because every good thing comes from God. We should focus more on the Giver than the gift. We can be content with what we have when we realize that with God we have everything we need.

No, archeologists use THE MYTHS to locate dig sites. Like they do the bible.
(Yahweh = Greek Pantheon. Bible = myths.)

The search for Troy is probably the most well known....
**In 1866, Frank Calvert, the brother of the United States' consular agent in the region, made extensive surveys and published in scholarly journals his identification of the hill of New Ilium (which was on farmland owned by his family) as the site of ancient Troy.**

But there are others...
**Archaeology meets mythology in Mycenean Pylos--"We are thrilled, excited and fascinated at the prospect of continuing its excavation," said Cosmopoulos, the Hellenic Government-Karakas Family Foundation Endowed Professor in Greek Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "We have been searching for it since the dig started in 2006."**
http://www.sciencecodex.com/archaeology_meets...

Archaeologists don't just dig in random places. They use folklore, myths, legends for clues to ancient sites.
But just because a city or palace or temple is where legends say it was doesn't mean that the people or events were true. Humans like to make up stories for entertainment, you know.

You state that because places mentioned in the bible have been found, then the stories must be true.
By your logic, since Troy is a real place, and the stories say that the gods and goddesses helped or hindered the heroes, are you willing to believe that Zeus, Hera and Aphrodite are real?

Did not know all that. Will have to look into it.

No i did not say that explicitly. I said it adds weight to Scripture. You have locations and actual historical people. Pilate, for example.
By your logic, since Troy is a real place, and the stories say that the gods and goddesses helped or hindered the heroes, are you willing to believe that Zeus, Hera and Aphrodite are real?
If they are, they are Demons. I do not believe they are real. They had different perceptions and practices. Either way they were Pagan.

Thanks for that lovely verse, Tony. But what about...

Nov 5, 2011--A bus carrying Abilene Christian University students to a Texas children’s home for a weekend of missionary work lost control on a highway Friday and overturned, killing a 19-year-old student and injuring all 15 other people onboard, four of them critically, officials said.
Friday’s crash stirred memories of a fatal wreck nine years ago that killed five ACU students from Nigeria. The students were traveling around Texas during Easter break in an SUV.

Nov 7, 2011--Ten Zion Christian Church members were killed and 45 were injured when a bus overturned on the N1 highway in Polokwane, the Limpopo roads and transport department said today.

June 19, 2012--A funeral was held Tuesday for a young missionary couple that died over the weekend in a tragic plane crash in Zambia.

May 13, 2012--Five young people were flying to a Christian rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa, when their plane crashed Friday near Chanute in southeast Kansas, killing four.
“Although the tragedy has brought overwhelming grief, there is also hope and a comfort from knowing that all four men were strong men of God. They loved Jesus with all of their hearts.”

The "lord" wasn't rescuing or protecting these people who presumably "loved" and "acknowledged" him, was he?

A horrible accident can happen...99 people die...1 lives.
The survivor will say how wonderful that "god" was watching out for him. I guess "god" just didn't like the others as much.
"The invisible and the non-existant looks very much alike.

Well, maybe an agnostic since you might consider that they are "demons."

I don't believe your "god/demon" is real either.

You look at the negative side of death. A christian, though overwelmed by the loss of a loved one, finds solace in the fact that upon death, a christian is no more in pain, no more suffering but is asleep and awaits the coming of the Lord to take him/her to be with Jesus. Though its sad that 99 people are no longer among the living, its heaven's gain. They have passed through the door that we all must go through. I have no fear in death, for I know where I am going and to whom I belong to. Mind you that I said I do not fear DEATH, but I fear dying or suffering until I reach my last breath, then it is my gain. Heaven is mine. You might see it as a fairy tale, a myth, a lie, but that doen't sway my faith. I believe what I do just as strongly as you oppose it or don't believe it.

You would have to compare accounts. Like i said before. It all falls on the resurrection of Christ. You not sufficient cause to effect resurrection. God is only sufficient cause. If it happened as indicated then God is real and Christianity is true. If not then Christianity is false. That is the difference. It is based on an actual event which either happened or it did not. I believe it did. 100% of all true Christians believe in the resurrection of Christ. People who believe they are Christian but do not believe in the resurrection mistakenly believe they are Christian. As a native i used to tell people it was Custer who died for their sins. Not Jesus. Consumed with hate. Christ changed all that.

I was not talking about death per se. We all die.

I referred to Tony's posting of a Psalm.
I want Tony to point out their "miracle."

It didn't help these people to "believe" that (especially if they worship him correctly) some imaginary superbeing loves them, is going to watch out for them and take care of them IN THIS LIFE.
If Yahweh existed, these are the kind of people who he is supposed to be looking out for...young, eager to celebrate their faith, missionaries, real believers.
He didn't. So he is either "not as advertised" or nonexistant.
I've noticed there is a large gap between the words of the bible and reality.

Bible Verse Of The Day

__________

— Ephesians 6:10-14 —

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place...

__________

As Christians, we should walk closely with Jesus. Satan desires to lure us into destructive actions that rob us of God's plan for a good, full life. Stay connected to the Savior; read the Word, pray, and fellowship with other believers. These are weapons we use against the Devil in spiritual war.

So put on your armor but act like sheep.

And above all....Don't question the bible and don't think about how it doesn't make any sense.

The Judgment of the Nations

Matthew 25: 31-46

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, Mt. 16.27 then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

32 and before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

33 and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 for I was ahungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee ahungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42 for I was ahungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee ahungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

----------

When you do charity work you serve God, and I have always found that it feeds my spirit and inspires my soul when I do charity work. No matter what else I have going on in my life I always find time to do charity work.

All the best,

Tony V.
